Bedfordshire Completed Look ups / Re: 1841 census look up please for Thackray
« on: Wednesday 17 November 10 03:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Gladys
Some 4yrs ago you posted a query for a Census lookup of Naomi Thackray in Bedfordshire, and received the information quoted below. Yesterday I did a search on Rootschat for my Thackray family in Doddington and arrived at your post.

The family in the 1851 Census reply includes my 3.gtGrandparents and my 2.gtGrandparents. How can this be? .... well, the parents William and Sarah are my 3.greats, and their daughter Mary married William Haynes - the apprentice currier at the bottom of the list.

What I'm getting around to is .... do you have any information on the ancestors of either William Thackray or his wife Sarah nee Hensman?

Hope this reaches you.

John

Thanks Sandy, that saved me double checking Eversholt. He was actually in Toddington in 1841,

HO107/005-34-2 folio 9B
Dunstable St Toddington
William Thackray 45 Currier Not born in county
Sarah Thackray 45 Not bic
Elizabeth Thackray 25 Not bic
Mary Thackray 23 Not bic
Sarah Thackray 21 bic
John  Thackray 19 bic
Ruth  Thackray 12 bic
Caroline  Thackray 10 bic
Naomi  Thackray 8 bic
Rebecca  Thackray 6 bic
Timothy  Thackray 14 bic
William Haynes 21 apprentice bic

So the Thackray family could put out a complete football team, and take the apprentice along as the referee!

Regards

David

Yes Winston, "this John is that John".

My John Betteridge married Elizabeth Akehurst at St. Mary's Church in Eastbourne 20 June 1804. I have the SFHG and akehurst.org to thank for links to that side of the family.

Wow, what great detectives ! Thank you so much Valda (x2), winston, Willow & sillgen.

It will take me a while to absorb and check all the clues and links provided, so I'll report back with my findings and let you know the progress.

Ancestry's transcribing of the 1851 Census blows my mind away - no wonder I couldn't find John Betteridge - I can't wait to have a look at the image at my local library tomorrow.

Again, thanks for ALL the information. Rootschatters are the tops!

Sussex Lookup Requests / 1851 Census, Eastbourne - Detective work!
« on: Monday 18 August 08 04:23 BST (UK)  »
In 2005, a kind person on this forum found a relative in the 1851 Census. Since then I've tried to find the image via Ancestry.com , but can't locate the household.

Could someone please check to see if they can find the 1851 census image for the following:

Eastbourne, Sussex:
HO 107 1637 F130 (the reference I was given)

John Betteridge Hd widower 71  b Gls Stoke
Ellen     "           dau laundress  30  b Eastbourne

I am still trying to trace the baptism of John Betteridge. As he died before 1861, the 1851 census is my only source for his place of birth.

If you find the image, could you please give me the full reference (including page no), and also look closely at his place of birth  ... is the transcription of "Gls Stoke" correct, or could it be something else?

I believe "Gls" is Gloucestershire, and possibly "Stoke" is Stow-in-the-Wold - I've been told that Stow is a local Cotswold abbreviation for Stow-in-the-Wold.

Hope you can help with solving the place of birth mystery.

Many thanks
John

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Detective needed!! 1851 Census - Sussex

Hello,

In 2005 a kind person on RootsChat found a relative of mine in the 1851 Census. Since then I've had access to the Ancestry version of this census through my local library, but have never been able to locate the entry myself.

Could someone please check to see if they can find the image for the following household:

Eastbourne, Sussex:
HO 107 1637 F130 (is reference I was given)

John Betteridge  Hd widower 71  b Gls Stoke
Ellen                   dau laundress 30 b Eastbourne

I have still not been able to trace the baptism of John Betteridge. He died before 1861, so the 1851 census reference is my only clue to his place of birth.

If you find the image, could you please give me the full reference (including page no), and also check the image to see if the transcription "Gls Stoke" is correct. Could it be something else?

I've assumed Gls Stoke means  Gloucestershire, and "Stoke" is possibly Stow-in-the-Wold (I've been told that locals just refer to the village as "Stow"), and a Cotswold accent in Sussex in 1851 could easily transcribe "Stow" to "Stoke".

Fun stuff this detective work!  Anyone got other suggestions?

John

Hi Anne & 'Brede',

Glad to see that my hunt has by chance flushed out your link to Ellen May Betteridge from Eastbourne.

Did you know that there are two Ellen May Betteridge listings in the 1891 Eastbourne Census? The elder is a widow age 66 born in Mitchelmarsh, Hants. The younger is age 1 born in Eastbourne (and her father Walter Betteridge was born in Winchester, Hants).  Is the elder Ellen May the mother of Walter, with a grandaughter named after her?

Did your Percy Attfield marry the above younger Ellen May Betteridge? If so, I encourage you to follow your Betteridge line back ..... we may link up in Glocestershire!

Let me know about Ellen May.

Hi Alli,

Thanks for the BIVRI lookups for my BETTERIDGE family.

At first glance I thought that your John Betteridge find in Abson,Glocestershire was too far from Stow [0n-the-Wold].  But I should explore further, as the only reference I have to his place of birth is "Stoke [or Stow], Glos." from the 1851 Census.

Close to Abson I have found "Stone", "Stone Easton", "North Stoke" ....... so the hunt continues.

Hello,
I've just done a search for "Betteridge" on this site, and came across your 2005 quest to find John Betteridge of Whiteparish, Wiltshire.

I don't have a direct answer, but I'm researching my Betteridge roots in Sussex and Whiteparish sounded familiar. I searched my files and found from 1881 Census two Betteridge families in Eastbourne,Sussex and both families had Betteridge members born in Whiteparish.

I'm sure there is some link between those born in Whiteparish and those born in Eastbourne (possibly their grandparents or uncles), and between us we may have the answer.

Do you have any Betteridge links about 1800 to the Cotswolds area (Gloucestershire) ?   My earliest Betteridge in Eastbourne is a John Betteridge married about 1807 in Eastbourne. I've found him on the 1841 Census - John Betteridge born about 1780 in Stow or Stoke in Gloucestershire ... but I can't find a baptism in Gloucestershire.

If you are still on the Betteridge search ... let me know.
