US Lookup Requests / Re: 1890 / 1900 US Census lookup please

Not sure what the reference numbers are, but it says enumeration district #157, sheet no. 24.

I think we may have Joseph in 1910 and 1920 as well.

In 1910, there's a family in Versailles, Alleghany, PA with Joseph, Annie (nickname for Hanah?), and Oliver.  Joseph was 38 years old, married for 21 years, born England, and listed as a printer in a printing office.  Annie was 37, and Oliver was 18.  Annie was listed as mother of 3 children born, one living.  Oliver was listed as a stenographer for the railroad.

In 1920, in Geneva, Ashtabula, Ohio (your Akron connection?), there's Joseph & Annie Pell, ages 49 & 48, immigrated in 1889, and naturalized in 1893.  He was listed as owning the home and working as a farmer.

Fife / Re: balfour family fife

I hoped I could help, but I can't.  I have Balfours in Fife as well, but I don't think they're connected to the ones you mentioned.  I have a Janet Balfour, born 1816 in Pittenweem, married to David Nicoll and daughter of George Balfour & Jannet White.  George and his father, also George, were apparently born in Largo.

The 1890 US Census is pretty much non-existent.

In 1900, there is a Joseph Pell in South Fork, Cambria, Pennsylvania who looks to match.  His birth date is Aug. 1870.  He was 29 years old and had been married for 10 years.  His wife is Hanah? born Oct. 1871.  Both Joseph, Hanah, and their parents were born in England.  They both immigrated in 1887.  Joseph was a naturalized citizen.  Joseph was listed as a coal miner.  They had a son Oliver E. Pell born Apr. 1891 in Pennsylvania and apparently had another child who was deceased.

There's a possible J. Samuel Pell and wife Elizabeth in Duncan, Tioga, PA, but the birthdates seem a bit off (they are indexed as born in 1828, but on the census it looks like 1818 although the ages are listed as 72), and it says Elizabeth is mother to 11 children, 6 of them living.  Any chance that's the right one?

Sorry, I didn't have any luck finding anything that seemed to fit very well.  Maybe someone smarter than me can give it a whirl.   :)

Do you know his brother's name and date of birth?  They might be on the 1900 and/or 1910 Census, but it would be easier to narrow down with the brother's information.

Scotland / Re: Possible out-of-wedlock birth?

Thanks so much for the information, John.  What does that paternity stamp mean - that paternity was established after the certificate was originally filed?

I didn't see anyone that seemed to match in the 1930 Census, Social Security Death Index, or Massachusetts Death Index.

Good idea about the grandparents.  I think I have her living with them in the 1901 Census and didn't even realize it, since she was listed as Maggie.  Charlotte had a sister named Maggie, so I think I was connecting the two Maggies in my mind.  In the 1901 Census, it says she was born in Dundee.  I'll have to see if I can find the grandparents in 1891 and any birth certificates from Dundee that I didn't already check.

Scotland / Possible out-of-wedlock birth?

Looking at my information, I think I may have an ancestor who was born out of wedlock and I don't know who her father is.  I guess it's possible that nobody knew, in which case I guess I've got a dead end on that branch of the family tree.  Here's the information and if anyone has ideas of where to look, it would be greatly appreciated.

Based on a Scottish marriage certificate, ship passenger lists, and US census records, Margaret Clark was born in Scotland about 1883.  Her mother, Charlotte Deuchar Clark, was born 28 Jan 1864 in Inverarity And Methy, Angus, Scotland.  Charlotte's parents were James Clark and Georgina Deuchars.

I have a 1881 Census entry that might be Charlotte - it has a Charlotte, age 17, living in Mains and born in Inverarity, as a farm servant to the Brown family.  (They had an 18 year old son...maybe he's Margaret's father?)  Charlotte's marital status was listed as N/A.  There was an 1891 Census entry that seemed to fit Charlotte (dairymaid living in Mains), but there's no listing for her daughter.  I'd poke around more, but I used up all my credits on Scotlands People and I don't want it to turn into a wild goose chase.

On 10 Dec 1897 in Mains, Charlotte married a man named Alexander Clark.  I originally had assumed he was Margaret's father, but given the late date of their marriage, it seems unlikely.  Alexander died in 1900.  In 1905, Charlotte got remarried to John Duncan and she was living in Mains at the time.

On 05 Oct 1906, Margaret married David Nicoll.  Her usual residence was listed as Dundee, and there was no father listed on her marriage certificate.  They did list Charlotte and stated that "afterwards married Alexander Clark."  Margaret and David came to Massachusetts in 1911.

I haven't had any luck finding Margaret's birth certificate.  Considering that it seems her mother lived in Angus throughout her life, I have looked at a few certificates from there, but none have panned out.
