Cheshire Lookup Requests / Address search in Hoylake Cum West Kirby
« on: Friday 27 May 22 07:34 BST (UK)  »
Is there any way to find out who was living at a particular address on the 1901 England census? The addresses in question are 13 and 19 Back Sea View, Hoylake Cum West Kirby, Cheshire, England. On the subscription site I have, this seems to be possible via the Census Summary Books on the 1911 census, but not on the 1901 census.

(These are the addresses I have from the birth and christening certificates of a child who was later adopted.)

Thank you,

Alan

Thank you Trish. They don't appear to be on freereg. Was told a couple of years ago they would be coming soon on a certain paid website, but not sure if they have. Happy Christmas to you!  :)

Thank you Dave and Trish. Sorry to be slow in responding.

Yes, I have Phoebe born in May 1796 in Lullington and Frances born in 1771 in Edingale. Thank you for the information about the 4 brothers and two of them dying just before Martin declared bankruptcy. Was "Ashby-de-la-Zouch Bank" the name of the bank? Perhaps, as you say, that played a role. I've always kind of imagined that Martin overreached himself, but I don't really know. I didn't realise until I read his will that Phoebe (my 4th g grandmother) was his adopted daughter, and with it went my chance of having at least one somewhat illustrious ancestor, since he was high sheriff of Derbyshire in 1789. I guess I'll never know who Phoebe's father was.

By any chance, do either of you know if a certain genealogical website has published the parish records for Coton-in-the-Elms?

All the best,

Alan

Thank you very much, Skoosh and Ev. Looks like a possible lead.

Ayrshire / Rankin's in Glasgow area
« on: Saturday 18 May 19 12:15 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to trace forward the descendants of one of my indirect ancestors, Mary Olinda Debrix (sometimes Devereaux or other variants), who married Duncan Rankin (originally from Paisley, Renfrewshire), in West Derby, Liverpool, in 1889 and subsequently first moved to Ardrossan, where they had 4 children, Elizabeth Froude Rankin (b 1890), Maggie Lauder Rankin (b 1891), Mary Gibson Rankin (b 1893) and John Rankin (b 1896).

They later moved to the Glasgow area, as I found them on the 1911 census in Pollokshields, Lanarkshire.

Unfortunately, John died at 22 yrs old in WWI. Also, though I found a marriage for Elizabeth to William George Forsyth on 20 July 1914 in Cathcart, I've so far only found one daughter for them, Bertha Johann Forsyth (b 1921 in Milngavie) and she appears to have married only in 1968, so may not have had any children. William and Elizabeth were living at 44 Albert Drive, Crosshill, Glasgow at the time of their marriage.

The other lines are proving more difficult to trace, especially with the system of credits on a certain Scottish records website(!) and the fact that the mother's maiden name is not available to narrow down birth records.

I'm wondering if someone has a suggestion as to the best resource to use to narrow down these searches before looking for confirmation on the official website. Also, would Cathcart have indeed belonged to Renfrewshire at that time? I'm a bit confused about this point. This is my first real venture north of the border!

(Sorry, I quite forgot that I had unsuccessfully undertaken this research once before back in 2013 it seems:

Threads merged.

However, the marriage I found for Mary Gibson Rankin was not for the right person. I recently discovered that the family moved to the Glasgow area, so I was looking in the wrong place before.)

Thanks,

Alan

Other Countries / Re: India Help

Hi Donna,

I just read through the whole set of posts again, but I'm having difficulty getting a handle on it all as I haven't looked at this for a while.

As regards Falleniceangel, I can only say that I've had several experiences where I thought people didn't want to answer me, but it turned out that they were just too busy or didn't get the message or something. It certainly sounds like she wanted to contact you.

I would try PM'ing her again, giving her your email address and asking for hers. If you already gave her your email address, don't forget to check your spam folder, though if she sent you a message some time ago and it ended up in your spam folder, it might not be there any more.

Wishing you the best of luck.

Alan

P.S. I might perhaps add to this that it appears that the records from British India are fairly incomplete, as far as I can gather. I finally made it to the British Library last year to do some research on someone's family. I didn't find what I was looking for there, but actually looking at how the records were arranged and stored there enabled me to make a breakthrough afterwards on the Internet. The surname I was looking for was a double barrelled one, "Austen Lewis", but I found a bunch of records, some with the surname of Lewis with Austen or Austin as a first name. I am very far from being an expert in these records, but I can certainly understand Falleniceangel's initial post, where she says she can't find the Indian records. They may simply not be there or they may be there in some variant of the expected name perhaps.

Devon / Re: Devon House of Mercy
« on: Monday 02 October 17 18:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi Jane,

I'm not sure if this is relevant, but I believe there are some records from the Devon House of Mercy for the year you refer to. In my case of around 1871, there is nothing, but if you search on the National Archives website, you will find some entries for the Devon House of Mercy, though these records are not held in Kew, but mainly at the Berkshire records office or sometimes by Devon archives.

Best wishes,

Alan

London and Middlesex / Re: Daughter of mariner who died in Lambeth in 1973

Thank you, Shaun. Look very interesting, but it doesn't seem to be him. At his marriage, "Francis Xavier Martins, 32, bachelor, father Xavier F Martins married Magdalene Veronica Austen Lewis, 20, spinster, father Joseph Austen Lewis by Licence.", so the father and the age don't match. I will look into it more later. Alan
