Staffordshire Lookup Requests / 1891 lookup Betsey Kidson
« on: Thursday 01 September 05 06:25 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find a Betsey Kidson who was born in Wednesbury Stafford christened in Mar 1837 married age 19 in 1857. Can anyone help me locate her in 1891. She was living at 144 Blackfriars Rd,  Surrey, England during the 1881 census. Someone suggested she ended up in West Bromwich poorhouse but cannot find any references to confirm this. Her husband is John Kidson. Cannot locate him either but he may have died by this census date. I have no death record for him. John is 2 years older than Betsey and was born in Stoke Milbrow, Shropshire, England.
Thanks

England / Death at Sea
« on: Thursday 01 September 05 05:52 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know how I could find a record of deaths at sea. I have a g g grandfather who may have died at sea. His name is John Maxwell sometimes he goes under the name John Brown. I last have him at the birth of his daughter Ethel in 1882 at which time he was in the RMA as a gunner. Family legend has him dying on the Titanic (not likely too old) and in a Cyclone off America. Is there an online resource for finding his death? I cannot find him on free BMD or 1837online. Maybe someone else can! It appears he was born in Ireland - again no birth certificate info. He is listed on his 1881 marriage certificate as having a father Johnson Maxwell a farmer. I also found a John Brown in 1881 census that is said to be Irish. There is a Johnston Maxwell on Griffiths Evaluation who is a Farmer in Roscommon Ireland. Other than that He seems to have appeared from nowhere and disappeared again. I am not sure why he had the alias. He is 32 on his wedding certificate which makes his birth date about 1849. Hope someone wiser and more expert at this out there can help me. He is my only link to my name - Maxwell!!!!

Rosanne

By the way his wife was Mary Ann Kidson on wedding certificate but was born Mary Eliza Kidson. Married name both Mary Ann Brown, Mary Ann Maxwell and Mary Eliza Maxwell. Known as Molly. Died in Australia.

Hi Ros,

You gave me information on this post about a record for Betsy Kidson in West Bromwich in 1891. Where did you get that information? I would like to follow it up but cannot find it online.

Hi Prue,
In 1901 Mary Ann was going by her given name Mary Eliza surname Maxwell she is given as married and a visitor occupation hospital nurse sick. This was in St Pancras. Ethel was born in Portsea and in 1901 is staying with Mary Eliza's brother John Henry Kidson.
I have thought of trying to get military records but have had difficulty due to being in Australia. Any help with how to go about it would help. He was a gunner at Eastney Barracks in 1881 and possibly or probably going under the name of John Brown.
thanks Rosanne
