Hi,
I have had a brick wall concerning Donald Mackenzie (McKenzie) from Kincardine, Rossshire for many years.
Donald Mackenzie went to India aboard the ship “Waterloo” and the Depot Description list states that he was from Kincardine, Ross.
It gives his age as being 22 in 1822 when he enlisted. However his burial record in in 1867 states his age as 71 making his date of birth about 1796. I was unable to obtain any further information from this document other than he was a labourer. No parents etc. were listed.
However, I recently came across a letter written by the minister from the church in Dingwall, Ross.
The letter was written in 1875 by Rev. Ronald McAlister and was in response to enquiries made by one of Donald’s sons requesting information on Donald’s family.
Firstly, the letter states that Donald was a native of Nig (Nigg?)
It then goes on to say that Donald had 4 brothers, namely, Alex, John, Robert & William and also 3 sisters, Lillias, Isabella and Catherine. All of whom are dead with the exception of William who is 88 and resides at Tain, Ross-shire.
He then goes on to say that Alexander has left 4 of a family, John 2, Robert 5 & William 5, the majority of which reside in Ross-shire.
Lillias died unmarried and Isabella left 5 of a family. Catherine’s family are all dead.
I tried finding William on the 1871 Scotland census but could not find any possibilities. I also looked for Lillias in earlier census’ as she was unmarried but wasn’t able to determine whether I had the correct one.
Also, the obituary for one of Donald’s sons who died in India states that he came from Nigg, even though he was born in India.
My query then is – where do I begin searching. Is Nigg the starting point?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
