Hi

This is the back of the postcard with the photographers name.

I had him as J Merhin but it could be something quite different ?

Any ideas.

Thank You.

Hi Geoff,

That really does look like the same shirts. Its a pity the quality of my one is poor, just noticed some seem to have badges on as well as the star motif but I wouldn't imagine they could be enhanced to show any information.  Could be a sign that they have won some competition previously.  Thought of sending it to the Whitehaven News but it probably wouldn't be a good enough copy to print very well.
Long johns - thats strange, it makes me even more curious.

Thanks again, this is interesting.

Best Wishes.

Thank you Jim & Rosemary.

This could be the youngest daughter born in 1880 but then who were the children. Hers were born son 1905, son 1912 & daughter 1918 before they left for America.  Have had a few other thoughts.

Presume this would be a studio photograph rather than one taken at home ? Probably expensive to do this at the time so could it have been a special occasion ? What did people wear when they got married ?  Can't really see alot of detail but has the little girl got a flower in her hand and the boy either a handkerchief or flower in his jacket ? I suppose that could be worth a consideration.

Certainly a curious mystery at the moment.

Thanks everyone.
Sandra

Hi China,

Thank you for the information, I am learning something new all the time.

These are the 2 daughters born in 1886 & 1888.  This picture was taken around 1943.
They married in 1909 & 1910 so I am thinking the photograph could not be them because they had no family until later.  Think they bear a resemblance to great-grandmother !

Best Wishes.

Hi Geoff,

I have e-mailed asking for a scan of the back of the photograph - to try and be more specific on the spelling or any other information that could be lurking.

Best Wishes.

Hi China,

I have been trying to find out on the Cumberland site about a photographer called J Merhin whose stamp is apparently on the back of this photograph but no luck so far. I've asked long lost cousin in USA to scan the back of the photograph to see if we can unravel the spelling which she wasn't sure about.

So your thoughts are that this was taken about 1905 or that sort of period.  Are the children dressed fashionably for that time ? Is the furniture also in keeping ? Sorry to ask so many questions but I haven't a clue.  This lady died in 1914. The other children they had were both boys in 1891 & 1896 and none of the older ones were married or had children of that age.  Think this is going to be an on going mystery.
I have seen a photograph of the 2 girls born 1886 & 1888 - they strike a remarkable resemblance to mother.

Many thanks for your thoughts, this is interesting.

Best Wishes.

Hi China & Geoff.

Thank you for your thoughts.  I thought this one was a bit bizarre.  A long lost cousin sent me this from America & said:- mentioned in the post of the West Cumberland Times June 25 1898 - Egremont Football Club.  I cannot find any reference to that article anywhere but the suits the gentleman are wearing didn't seem in keeping with 1898 which puzzles me.
Egremont use to have a great reputation for rugby but they didn't quite look like rugby players.

Best Wishes.
