Census and Resource Discussion / Deleted census entry?
« on: Friday 21 January 11 10:08 GMT (UK)  »
Why would this census entry be crossed through?  It is still in the Ancestry index, in fact twice, under Walter W Stock and Walter Wm Stock.

The Common Room / Unusual - to me - Baptism entry COMPLETED
« on: Friday 14 January 11 11:46 GMT (UK)  »
A couple on my tree were married in January 1849.  In the 1861 census they have three children aged 10, 4 and three months.  I then found the baptism of the oldest child George in 1853 and at the same time another younger son was baptised (I haven't yet found him in the censuses).  George was reported born 5 June 1850 which fits with the census records and GRO index.  I then found a baptism entry for what is almost certainly a younger sister.  She was baptised 30 January 1850.  The entry has an annotation "Private Baptism child died."

Could anyone explain the possible circumstances of this baptism please.

Armed Forces / Naval service mystery
« on: Friday 03 December 10 11:25 GMT (UK)  »
Bit of a long story so I hope you'll bear with me.

On a immigration record of February 1909 a relative of mine stated he had been visiting his brother William Weekly who was serving on the HMS Severn.  This - thanks to other rootschatters - led to finding the service record of the said William Weekly.  He did indeed serve on the HMS Severn but only from September 1899 to June 1900.  At the time of the immigration record he was serving on/at HMS Pembroke which I believe was either a shore station or ship attached to it.  Would there be any explanation for this apparent contradiction?

As an aside, could anyone also explain what C. S. Engagements means.  William seems to have started his service aged 15 but his C. S. Engagements started on his 18th birthday.  They ended on the eve of his 30th birthday (Shore C. S. Expired)

Thank you

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What's the name of the ship?

Can anyone tell what ship William Weekly served on in 1909 please?  The extract is from Border Crossings: From Canada to U.S., 1895-1956 on Ancestry and is from 1909 and Richard Weekly had been visiting his brother William

Scotland / Church History
« on: Thursday 25 November 10 09:26 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping someone may be able to help with some Church history form the early 1900's.

In 1907 a London businessman, David Thomas, founded a holiness group called The Holiness Mission later to be called the International Holiness Mission.  In 1910 members of the The Holiness Mission made a preaching tour of Scotland, presumably of an evangelistic nature.  The only information I have is that this tour took place in 1910 (possibly in the summer), one of the preachers was a Mr George Wooster, another may have been a Thomas Wild.  In later years the International Holiness Mission merged with the Church of the Nazarene.

It is a long shot but I was wondering whether anyone might have any information about The Holiness Mission in Scotland or be able to point me in the direction of a source.  Thank you

Australia / Bakers Creek, Victoria
« on: Friday 19 November 10 12:29 GMT (UK)  »
In the Australia birth index on Ancestry I have found the entry for an ancestor recorded as born in Bakers Creek, Victoria in 1858.  The only modern day Bakers Creek I can find reference to is in Queensland.  The person in question returned to England around 1860 and in subsequent censuses stated that he was born in Victoria, Australia.  An older brother was born in Brunswick, Victoria and states that he was born in Melbourne - which adds up.

Can anyone tell me if there was a Bakers Creek in Victoria in the 1850's

Thank you

Hope someone can help
I have come across a family reference on http://newspapers.nla.gov.au.  The article heading is "Assignments"

The citation for the article is http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article8748421 and my connection is "Wild & Robbins"  This was my families farming business in Middlesex, England and as far as I knew there was no link to Australia.

Thank you in advance

The Common Room / Names on certificates
« on: Friday 13 August 10 23:16 BST (UK)  »
I have what appears to be a confusing set of names on some certificates.  Richard Weekly married Rachel Douglas in 1848, I have a copy of the wedding certificate.  However they NEVER appear together in any census, in fact in the 1851 census Rachel is living with her parents and Richard is living with his sister (miles apart!) and both give their marital status as unmarried.  Richard then disappears altogether from the census records.  In the 1861 and 71 census Rachel remains living with her family and is recorded as married but with no husband.  In 1881 she is living with her brother and is recorded as a widow.  Richard and Rachel have a son together a month after they were married who is brought up by Richards parents Thomas and Rebecca - birth information from parish records.  In the census records Rachel is then recorded as having three more children.  I have a copy of the birth certificate of the youngest son, Thomas, born in 1868.  The mother's name is Rachel Weekly formerly Douglas the father's name is recorded as Thomas.  I can find no record of Rachel re-marrying and if she had the name should be on the birth certificate.  Now Rachel was illiterate as on both the marriage and birth certificate she signs with 'her mark'.  In the census records the surname varies - Weekly, Weakly, Wheatley.  However as she lived in the same village and with family her whole life it is definitely the same person.  I have what is almost certainly the marriage certificate of her son Thomas.  The surname is Wheatley but age, area and wife's christian name combined with census records make it a 9 out of 10 match but again the name of the groom's father is Thomas.

There is no evidence to suggest Richard had a second christian name so can anyone suggest a reason why the discrepancy in the names.

PS. I have posted a query about this family on the Buckinghamshire board but no one could help and it was  before I was given copies of the certificates.
