For what it's worth, Ryan, I think that could well have been written by Jessie from your previous thread.

An easy one for me - my great grandparents Sarah and Thomas (whose wedding portrait was so wonderfully treated in this very forum). However, there'd be a condition ... ... that all of the other ancestors I have questions for were also invited. There - not too unreasonable, I think  :D

I thought Flanery immediately, but then thought it was a strange spelling. However, it's claimed to be a good 'un ...

There was military activity at Welbeck Abbey during WW2 - both the Royal Artillery Corps and the Royal Tank Regiment were involved. I haven't discovered anything about post-war activity yet, but I'll keep looking.

Not my field at all, but I was always under the impression that swagger sticks weren't carried by anyone below NCO rank. However, it does look like a swagger stick. Another (small) possibility is that it may be a practice chanter - the fingered bit of a bagpipe but a blow-in version to avoid having to carry the full bag kit around. Admittedly, it looks too thin to be that, but then the image isn't any too clear.

I take your point, brigidmac. However, when I was doing my research (and, I have to say, when some very nice people on here were doing my research for me as I was a complete dumb-brain for a while) I found that I often wanted to go back to specific records. Using the name as it is on the record you're looking for helps there.
In my mind, certainly, all my McLeods are spelled just so, although they range on records from McLeod to McCloud to Mackloud to just Cloud and anything in-between.
I suppose it's all down to what you're most comfortable with. As long as those pesky ancestors who insist upon hiding away are finally winkled out, everyone's happy.

... but it helps if you can read Welsh (no, I can't).
