Just outside Tredegar on the road to Rhymney is a cemetery and at one time a row of cottages and a pub. In 1891 Daniel Watkins was living at Heathcock Cottage, Rhymney Road, Tredegar, next door to the Heathcock Inn adjacent to the Cefn Golau cemetery... this is also written as Cefngolan. There is now a council estate with the same name. I have visited the site of the inn and cottages and there is very little left to indicate they ever existed. I have yet to find any proper reference to the Heathcock Inn, but I think this is the place you are looking for. Jim

Kilkenny / William Michael Phelan of Goresgrove 1819
« on: Sunday 05 June 11 11:28 BST (UK)  »
In researching my Phelan family history, I came across this article written by my great grandfather's brother, who emigrated to the USA in 1850. I have traced his descendants but have yet to find details of his brothers and sisters. Does anyone have knowledge of the Colcloughs & Phelans at Goresgrove? She was Church of Ireland, he was RC... so where would they marry? Be buried?
In the Papineau Wars in Canada, whose side would he most likely be on and where would he be conscripted?
Does anyone know of the Norton family at Forkhill near Goresgrove?
Monster meetings, formation of clubs? Any information gratefully received. Jim

Westmeath / James Phelan, marriage circa 1885
« on: Monday 23 May 11 16:00 BST (UK)  »
I am researching the life of James Leo Phelan (1895-1966) Writer / Actor / Broadcaster / Tramp. He was born in Dublin in 1895 and his parents were James Phelan (1850-1916) and Catherine (either Collins or O'Reilly) (1858-????). So I am looking for the wedding of James & Catherine which took place around 1885. James was from Tipperary, Catherine from Westmeath and they lived in Dublin from at least 1890 when their daughter Mary was born there. Any information welcome. Thanks. Jim Phelan

Renfrewshire / Re: John McCallum of Greenock
« on: Monday 13 December 10 20:05 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks Elaine, I've just found a couple more clues which may or may not assist.

"John and Jeanie McCallum also had a daughter, Martha and son John and possibly one other child other than George. Not sure about birth dates yet.

I know John was an alcoholic and Jeanie committed suicide which lead the children being taken into care.

Not a happy story, but James' dad doesn't know much more about his family history and would really like to know more."

Thanks. Jim

Many thanks for that.... a fine piece of detective work. I thought that Heritage wouldn't be native to Wales and would probably be from Somerset. Jim
