Australia Resources & Offers / Link: City of Sydney Assessment Books 1845 to 1948
« on: Saturday 11 April 09 08:21 BST (UK)  »
This link is for the City of Sydney Assessment Books, covering the CBD of Sydney and inner suburbs too from about 1845, and gives not just the name of the occupier, but a description of the property, house by house, the owner of the property, the value etc, and of course includes FEMALE names, which are not on electoral rolls until 1903 in Aust. - Also it is in pdf format and fully searchable, all for free!

So you can find your family, and see who the neighbours were and even figure out who was in higher valued houses, in some instances even if they had kitchen as an outhouse etc back in early years!!!

Oh and it has maps of the different wards, and covers period from say 1845, to 1948.

Hi All,

SORRY, I FORGOT TO INCLUDE MY ACTUAL QUESTION.

"Can anyone give me ideas to date these New Zealand photos please".

I have four photos taken at studios in Wellington New Zealand, perhaps as early as 1873.  Two show studio as Wrigglesworth and Binns, one just as Wrigglesworth, and the 4th is from Davis & Co.  I can find newspaper advertisements at NZ Papers past that confirm these firms were operating in Wellington NZ in the 1870's and later.  I attach photos, sorry for small KB will try to get these re-scanned. Perhaps the bride and groom is of my elusive Mary Ann great grandmother and one of her husbands!

London and Middlesex / ROBINSON, SMITH, SNOOKS ex London pre 1862
« on: Friday 19 December 08 02:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

Attached image is from 4 Oct 1862  New Zealand newspaper and is full of fun, BUT also full of genie info too.  I would like to learn more about the various people mentioned in the article, so I can then try to find NZ descendants, to perhaps break my own NZ and NSW "Smith" brickwall.

Any suggestions please?  ::)

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Mary Ann Hunt photo c1873
« on: Thursday 18 December 08 11:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Thank you for all the help I have received previously on my John Smith photo.

The attached photo is of his (then future) wife, and her elders.  Other rootschatters have dated this photo as from c1873.  The youngest lass was born c1853 and migrated from UK to NZ in Sept 1873.

Sorry for the slight angle on this photo, is it possible to tidy it up at all?  Please do not rush, none of my cousins expect me to even ask for help on this one until well into the New Year, and you must all have commitments for your own families.

So the youngest lass could be related to both these other ladies, perhaps three generations in this one photo.  Perhaps the eldest lady was born c1790's, long before cameras !

Sorry for the small size of the file.  If you think I should wait until the original has been re-scanned, please let me know.

Cheers,

MA

Australia / HAYASHI Harry, c1875 Japan - 1925 NSW - who was he?
« on: Tuesday 16 December 08 00:22 GMT (UK)  »
Harry Hayashi, aged 50, died at the State Hospital at Liverpool NSW in 1925.  I have transcription of the NSWBDM reference 8403/1925.  He was born in Japan.  I also have copy of the transcription for Josephine Hayashi’s death at Auburn (5341/1925).  She was wife of a Harry Hayashi (her second marriage), no children with Harry.  However, there is a mystery, and I would like suggestions please to help me solve it.

I am interested in a Harry Hayashi as on my late grandfather’s WW1 AIF records, there is a lovely letter from Harry asking the AIF for information about his mate (my Grandfather).

I presumed that Harry would have needed an Alien Card (born in Japan, hence perhaps not a British Subject), and so now the National Archives have digitized one of many Alien Cards that may refer to “my” Harry. http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/imagine.asp?B=5213309&I=1&SE=1   Also, in the Sands Directories, I have found Harry lived at the same (boarding house) address as my Grandfather’s address given when enlisting in Feb 1916.

I do not know if the 1925 death, and/or the Alien Card are connected to the same Harry who wrote to the AIF about his mate. http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/imagine.asp?B=4741718&I=1&SE=1

Any suggestions please, as to how I should proceed. I have posted on messageboards on other sites – months ago, and no replies, (Japan, Hawaii boards too).  Several years ago I contacted various regional NSW libraries, family history groups, newspapers, - very little response, and basically "nothing".  Poor Harry, ...perhaps the little statuette on my dresser was his, at least I like to think so.

Cheers,

MA

Hi Everyone,

Many thanks for reading this posting.  The attached jpg dates from around mid 1880's, possibly Prospect Reservoir contructions NSW Australia.

The chap that the handwriting points to, probably is of John Smith, (1841-1928) - my Dad's grandfather.

Sorry that it is so close to Chrissy time, but if possible, it would be grand to have the writing made less prominent, or even perchance - erased !

Many thanks in anticipation,

Cheers,

MANY THANKS FOR EVERYONES HELP   :-*  :-*  :-*  Cheers, MA

Hi All,

I have a mysterious couple, from the mid 1800's, and have posted on the Lancashire thread at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,347616

I am seeking information about the parents of Mary Ann HUNT, perhaps a Hartley HUNT and Mary DICKENS, and an address of 9 Top Row, Northwich Cheshire.  There may be some connection to a Ralph HARTLEY who is listed on several census, particularly 1861, operating a canal flat, the vessel FLAT ALBION.

Please, if you can help with any suggestions, post them on the link I have inserted in this posting.

Cheers,

Hi All,

In 1930, New South Wales, Australia, Mrs Mary Ann Smith died.  The certificate shows that her parents were Hartley HUNT and Mary DICKENS.  From other documents we already know that Mary Ann HUNT migrated to NZ in 1873, aged 20.

We have not been able to find information about Hartley Hunt or his wife, Mary Dickens, although from that 1930 certificate we have further confirmation that Mary Ann was born c1853, Manchester, Lancashire, England.

Despite various online and also "old fashioned" searchings, including a NSW basedcousin who flew to the UK in Oct 08 we have not found Hartley or Mary HUNT.

We do know that Mary Ann could read and write (neatly, and with good sentence structures etc), and also that she sent letters to 9 Top Row, Northwich, Cheshire in the 1870's to 1890's (Top Row could be London Road and/or A49 and/or Tarpouley Rd).

Any suggestions please? for Hartley HUNT, Mary DICKENS or their daughter, Mary Ann HUNT.

Cheers, from a Great Grand Daughter of Mary Ann

The Lighter Side / English language v Records in English
« on: Thursday 11 December 08 22:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

Just sharing some "odd" bits and pieces here, with you all.  Today while I was on a certain fee charging family history website (Anc***********etc) I nominated that I was searching their Australian Collections.  The following notice appeared:

" Most of these records are in the English language but there are also records in English.
For best results, you should first search using English words and location spellings. If you do not find what you are looking for, try using English."

Perhaps that website has gremlins in its works at the minute! Perhaps the gremlins are busy with English tasks, perhaps they think that because I speak Australian  I cannot read English.  Oh well, tis all semantics to me.

Cheers,

MA
