Hi Sydneysiders,

Some history books are dull, hard to follow the author's theme, and simply not interesting.  BUT, Naomi Parry and Brad Manera with Will Davies and Stephen Garton, have put together an absolutely fantastic, relevant, responsible and infinitely interesting history about ordinary NSW families and WWI.   Naomi Parry is presenting a FREE lecture about the writing of their book.

RAHS Day Lecture Writing New South Wales and the Great War
Wednesday 1 March 1pm - 2pm
History House 133 Macquarie Street Sydney
 Presenter - Naomi Parry
Cost: Free
Naomi Parry, co-author of New South Wales and the Great War, will discuss the impact of the First World War on the ordinary citizens of NSW, not just in the theatres of combat but at home in our cities, towns and rural communities, and reveal some of the treasures from the collections of the State Library of New South Wales, State Records NSW, the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park and regional libraries and museums

(RAHS - Royal Australian Historical Society).

RAHS website : http://www.rahs.org.au/event/rahs-day-lecture-writing-nsw-great-war/  I would expect bookings would be essential.

May I please ask our Moderators if they will leave this on our Australia board rather than on the Events Board.

Australia / New South Wales Parliament 1824-current Proceedings
« on: Friday 29 April 16 05:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

The NSW Legislative Council began sitting in 1824.
The NSW Legislative Assembly (lower house) began sitting in 1856.

Here are the links to the Votes and Proceedings from those early beginnings until current times.

In the 19th century these V&P would often record names of people petitioning Parliament, and often those names included addresses, or at least locations.   You can sometimes find names and identifying info mentioned in reports from the Registrar General, or Coroner, or in Land applications, or any of the reports received by Parliament.

https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/hansard/Pages/Comprehensive-index-to-all-parliamentary-document.aspx

For the early V&P simply scroll down to the heading “First Legislative Council 1824-1855"

Hi All,

I am just RANTING about the poor transcription of the Printed text found on the uploaded Electoral Rolls.

I was looking for George FUZZENS in the online electoral rolls.  (to see if we could advance the following thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=745202.0 ) and at Ancestry I spotted the following Transcription in their Index for an entry in the 1908 ERolls for Victoria :

I clearly read this particular entry (line 2023) of the  Australian ER 1908, MARIBYRNONG, polling at Footscray Middle as:

PARSONS, Thomas Joseph, 18 Arran st., Footscray, Fitter, M

Ancestry has  it as

Ttwwaa Faisons, (for the name)
jasertb, il Arran it., Footscrav, (for the address)
Litter, (for the occupation)
Male.

Well at least they knew that M represented Male.   ::)

So if you have an ancestor, a British Subject, aged at least 21 years, and a resident of Victoria, Australia around the first decade of the 20th Century, and your ancestor has a given first name as Ttwwaa ..... well, he is found.

But if you were looking for your ancestor Thomas Joseph PARSONS, .... well, just remember that there's that spelling variation of Ttwwaa as an alternative for Thomas.  And of course, Ttwwaa lives at a house named jasertb and Ttwwaa does not have a second given name recorded on that Roll  .....

Cheers,  JM
PS Yes, Ancestry has been notified of the alternative transcription.  ::)

Australia / WARNING email being circulated to some Bigpond email users.
« on: Monday 15 February 16 03:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I keep in touch with my elderly rellies via email.   Most of them have bigpond email accounts as they are rural/regional NSW based, and have been email users since early 1990s.

NINE of them have had a particular email delivered today to their inboxes.    Two of these nine are FEMALES and the rest are MALES.   When you read the body of the email you will see why I mention this.

Please, please, alert your family members to tell them to JUNK this type of email.

 Good day        ,
I am Mark Goulder . I have emailed you earlier since without any response from you.On my first email I mentioned about my late client Kenneth    , whose relatives I cannot get in touch with. But both of you have the same last name so it will be very easy to front you as his official next of kin.

I am compelled to do this because I would not want the bank to push my clients funds into their treasury as unclaimed inheritance. If you are interested you do let me know so that I can give you Comprehensive details on what we are to do .

Yours faithfully,
Mark Goulder  .

The surname of all NINE of these rellies of mine ..... it is five letters long.  It starts with S and it ends with TH and there's MI in the middle....   ::)  So perhaps this Mark G needs to think about a) the deceit he is proposing and b) the numbers of female SMITH people he may end up sending this deceitful email to, elderly females do know that they are NOT Kenneth  ::)  ::)  ::) even if they would like, at their age, to still receive inheritances.

As IF ..... (these as the words my 106 year old Uncle Bert has just said to me on the landline ! .... now who did he pinch those words off ....  ::)

Cheers,  JM
