World War One / Re: War Diary U Battery 1918
« on: Monday 08 August 16 22:37 BST (UK)  »
Apologies Jim1 and maxD, I would usually receive an email notification of a reply on Rootschat, but for some reason this time I didn't.

At present I am only getting the odd hour here and there to do my research, so everything takes a long time to do. I am "glancing" over the Diaries and have narrowed down the probable time frame,  from, 21st March to 9th April 1918.

I have retrieved the letter I received concerning my original enquiry. I received the letter in March 2007 and it ended with an address should I want to make a donation. The address was, Royal Artillery Museums ltd (for the donation) posted to James Clavell Library, Royal Arsenal (West), Woolwich.

The first reference they gave me was correct for U Battery, WO95/1161 but it ended before the time I was interested in. I ordered out their second suggestion WO95/1158, which covered 16 Brigade 1917-1919, but this wasn't the Diary I was looking for.
With a little luck at the Help desk at the Archives in Kew, I was able to order out WO95/455 and this was what I was after, but I forgot to make a note of the file. Now with the help of Jim1, I have found the file again.

I don't seem to have the address of who I wrote to, but they were very helpful and sent me a speedy reply, It was the help desk at Kew who seemed the least knowledgeable about their War collection

What I do know is, 2nd Lt John Fleming, wrote his own personal diary and it is held at the War Museum Library archives. Surely one day (when I retire) I shall get time to go and read it !

Hi Jim1
I have now downloaded the "16th Army" file. It comes in 2 parts. Q Battery seem to have their own diary but U Battery are just mentioned in with the 16th Brigade.
I now have a lot of reading to do. 151 pages + 17 pages of Q.

You have been so much help, and I can't wait to try out the Battlefield maps link.

Thanks Jim1

No apology needed, you've been a great help.

I wonder if I could trouble you once more ?

"Their first 2 children were baptised in Warborough. No problem with those 2" or at least that's what I thought.

Emily Annie Haines, also known as just Annie, was born in 1888
Ellen Sophia Haines, born 1890

I had them both down as Baptised 29th July but I didn't have a year, I assumed they were baptised together in 1890.
But your information throws those assumptions out of the window as Ellen was Baptised 29th June 1890.
So when was Emily Annie Baptised.

Fingers crossed, I believe you are the right person for this mission should you choose to accept it.

Must admit Jim1, I thought U Battery were connected to the 5th, although I can't tell you why I thought that.
The record at Kew that I intend to download says 4th Army.

I was looking at some maps trying to place U Batteries movements in 1918 and not a single name from the War Diary appeared on any of the maps, very frustrating !

Hopefully a digital download will be easier to read than 10 year old faded photo copies of photographs.

Thanks Kim
I thought Warborough could be the answer.

It must be the correct baptisms but you have typed "Thomas Edward and SOPHIA" is that what the PR's say or should "SOPHIA" be "Sarah"

Thomas Edward Haines/Blissett Married Sarah Gammon in 1888, do you know if they married in Warborough

Thanks again Kim.

Hi Jim1
That looks promising !
I tried your link and I think it could be the 1st March 1918 28th Feb 1919 in WO95/455/2.
When I went to Kew the record wasn't coming up on any searches for U Battery or 16th Brigade.
The man on the help desk was quickly reading through his results and I stopped him when he said 16th Army. I remember saying "I thought there was only a 1st to 5th army" He didn't know so I took a chance and ordered it out. As luck would have it, it was the right one.

Thanks Jim1, I shall download it at the weekend, you've been a big help.

I almost forgot, yes, Driver John Norris 114660 is my Grandfather. I never met him as he died before I was born and my Dad never really got on him and never spoke about him.

I will let you know how I get on.

World War One / War Diary U Battery 1918
« on: Saturday 16 July 16 00:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi All
I've made the classic mistake in finding a record and not keeping a "record" of it's reference number.

My Granddad (John Norris) was a Driver with U Battery and in 1918 he won a MM and I wanted to know what he did.

I went to Kew and got out the War Diary for U Battery but it only went up to Dec 1917 (I think) but I wanted 1918. Unable to find what I wanted, I went to the help desk.
The help desk couldn't find U Battery either, but whilst they scrolled through their records I noticed a War Diary on their screen that looked out of place.
This was all about 10 years ago and the "out of place" record was the correct one. I took photo's of the record as it was getting late but I didn't take a photo of the Reference number. I would now like to download this War Diary in full, but I can't find it.

If it helps, U Battery was 16th Brigade and in March 1918 it was at Jeancourt. The 2nd Lt was John Fleming who has a personal diary held in the British War Museum.

I know it was a schoolboy error, but please help me, it's driving me nuts.

Yes I have, the 2 surnames seem a bit strange as they only appear on the PR's for the last 3 Baptisms.
Even on the Marriage records it states that Sarah Gammon married Thomas Edward Haines and Thomas Edward Blissett on the same day, so his alias was never a secret.

As you say perhaps they slipped through the net, perhaps I should look for any BT's.

Thanks for your input.

Any Ideas or contributions are welcome, you never know when something will trigger a new avenue to search.
