Hi...

Thank you.... that was what I was hoping someone would say :-)  It would be nice if an expert in male dress could pin down a date though since I have no idea if the landlord (who I am GUESSING is the chap on the far left) if father (George) or son (Thomas). They both died in 1889. I know I am probably asking the impossible since men were hardly the arbiters of fashion whereas (particularly young) women could focus a date quite sharply.

Thank you for responding!

Regards
Karen

It would be helpful if the photo had attached :-)

Dear All.... This is a photo taken outside a pub in Bath which was in business from at least as early as the 1840s until 1955.  The man in the centre of this group, with the angled apron, I am told, is a carpenter called Mr FRY who had a business nearby (the only one I could find on the census had been born in 1847 but this may not be him) - I imagine the other men are probably some of his workforce. The pub landlord is possibly the man on the left, holding two trophies. I am hoping he is a member of my family, two of whom (father and son) had the pub between the 1860s and 1889 or thereabouts.

Unhelpfully, this is a copy of a copy so I have no useful information about the original such as size, material or photographers - sorry!

Any suggestions most gratefully received.... many thanks!

Regards, Karen

I suspect that these guys are interested in their roots with respect to DNA haplotype but not in their more immediate family history per se.  I was approached by a man on the site whose group paid to have extra tests done on my cousin's sample because their project was studying (in a deeply academic and scientific way) the first migration of our haplotype out of Africa. I don't think he could have cared less who was related to who - he was rather excited by sequences though. Turns out that my Ridout family apparently descends from a Spanish soldier who came into Britain, possibly as a captive, with the Romans - not a lot of people know that  ;D

Hi...

Please excuse my bad manners!  I should have posted my negative findings here on the list.  I checked all the Digby estate records that I have (which aren't exhaustive) but found no LUFFMANs, unfortunately.

A male cousin of mine was kind enough, at my request, to submit a sample for yDNA. We had three really good matches on 37 markers and correct surname.  I've written repeatedly to all three men and none of them has ever replied... disappointing really. Hope you eventually get some better results.

Regards, Karen

Hi Roger

I remember that record... for a while, a few years ago, I thought that the John and Susannah in Purse Caundle were 'mine' (so much so that I became the OPC briefly!). I recall finding the marriage of Sarah and Matthew and looking at them in the census. Of course, their details didn't match those of my family eventually and I turned my attention to Sherborne. As to whether your Luffmans might have been living and working within the Digby estate I don't know but I have quite a few manorial records. Give me a few days and I'll see if I can find them.  Thank you for subscribing by the way!

Kind Regards.... Karen

Dorset / RIDOUT of Sherborne

Dear Dorset folk.... after a very long absence 'on the boards', I just wanted to post a link to my blog/website which is about the RIDOUT family of Sherborne (and later, Bath) but mentions other names too, of course.  My clan goes back at least as far as the mid 16th century and lived in Sherborne or the surrounding area, as far as I can see, for all that time. There is fair mention of Sherborne's West Mill.

The earliest known ancestor, William Ridout, was a yeoman but there were also millers, bakers, shoemakers, blacksmiths and all the folk you'd expect to find in this lovely Dorset town. If anyone is interested in having a look the link is: www.the-ridouts.com. Please feel free to drop in and help yourself - always looking for new contacts, both in the UK, the US and Canada.

Kind Regards
Karen
