Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Seeking a baptism for Henry OLLIS

PS (a real afterthought!).... I have a list of BMDs to order which is about 90 certificates long - I have to prioritise them financially hence the desire to find out as much as possibole first  - rather putting the cart before the horse I suppose :-)

Hi

To my shame I admit to cutting corners in actually making connections but, on the other hand, I always do the appropriate sourcing as well, having been taught well by the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies :-) I generally adopt Elizabeth Shown Mills' methodology which, naturally, requires utmost rigour and I am happy to say that, as far as I know, my family history is 'sound' but I know what you mean about planting a seed an ending up with an artificial tree! Maybe I shouldn't have injected so much doubt in my original enquiry - there are lots of bits and pieces of evidence to suggest that Henry is the son of Job and Caroline and I was searching for another piece :-)

Cheers
Karen

Hi

Wow - that beats all records thus far for a lookup :-)

To be more specific - no - I don't have the marriage of Henry yet (smack own hand!) and I take your point. The reason I have plumped for this couple is because Job was a publican and Henry would become one and remain so for most of his adult life. Also, Somerset Buildings (where Job had his pub) was located about 50 yards up the road from the Chatham Tavern where Henry lived for decades.  Working back through all the censuses, I tracked Job and Caroline (or Catherine) with little Henry before I looked for a possible birth registration. Having two births for 1847, both from Keynsham, rather muddied the waters. THEN the 1911 census came along and I saw that Henry had said he was born in Warmley which was the same village that Caroline had also stated herself to be from. It's true that I should probably get the marriage certificate but I was cutting corners (I am ashamed to admit). Perhaps I'm being a bit cheeky to make this request do you think? I was hoping that someone might have an easily accessible resource. If not then that's OK too. Nothing ventured as they say....  Thank you again. K

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Seeking a baptism for Henry OLLIS

Hi Chatterers

Please could someone kindly look up a baptism if the resource exists please? One of my x3 great grandfathers was Henry OLLIS. I believe he was born in about 1847. I think that Henry might have been the son of Job and Caroline OLLIS. In 1871 this family were living in Bath at a pub called the White Horse. Job was a beer seller and brewer. He was born in Keynsham and his wife Caroline was born in Warmley, Gloucestershire. In the 1911 census, Henry also describes himself as having been born in Warmley. Hence I am hoping that someone could find his baptism, possibly in Warmley PRs :-) Many thanks for reading thus far!

Cheers

Thanks Valda. Unfortunately, that was the first place I looked online but no joy! He may have been baptised at St Marylebone like his brother perhaps but I cannot know whether or not he may instead have had a non-conformist baptism. One day perhaps.... thanks anyway :-)

Dear Listers

Samuel RIDOUT was married in St Marylebone church 7th July 1824.
Son (1) William was born 30th Apr 1825 and baptised 7th Jun 1825 in St Marylebone church.
Son (3) Alfred was born in Marylebone 10th Apr 1831.
The 1831 census records 'Ridout' living in Brown Street, Marylebone.
Robson's London directory 1833 shows Samuel Ridout, cheesesmonger at 22 Brown Street, Marylebone.
Daughter Alice was born 26th Dec 1834 in St George's Westminster.
Alfred and Alice were baptised together in West Street Independent, Dorking, Surrey on 5th Jul 1837.
In 1841 the family were in Guildford Surrey.

Son (2) George Ridout was, according to censuses from 1851 onwards recorded as having been born in Marylebone and all records point to the year of his birth as 1828.

Given the above information, I thought it reasonable to suppose that George might have been baptised in Marylebone, like William, since the family appear not to have moved away from the area until about 1834. I do not know when the family turned to non-conformist practice other than saying it could have been after 1825 Please could anyone locate George's birth/baptism in ~1828 in the Marylebone area? I would be most grateful for any information or hints. He is not recorded with his siblings at West Street Independent as far as the IGI shows.  Many thanks :-)

Hi all

Seems like there are different experiences of this establishment. I have no memory at all of being in Roundabouts but I am interested in all the posts anyway which is just as well since I started the ball rolling in the first place :-)

I was put into the home probably when I was about three years old or so. I could have been there for quite a while and it would have been residential as opposed to a nursery experience. The home must have changed it's function as the years went by I think.

Love the photograph by the way. Looks like Muffin the Mule off to the right :-)

Hi Helen

Just had a private email from davrossa - apparently he did received the indenture and would be happy to make you a copy. I suggest you click on his name in the thread above and contact him. Unfortunately I do not have his private email address any more but I guess you could start a communication above and then go to private messages etc. Good luck.

Best wishes
Karen

Dear Helen

I am very sorry but I already gave this indenture away to the above named, 'Davrossa'.  Perhaps you could could contact him re. the contents although I have not heard from him since he asked to have the indenture and so I am only assuming that he received it!

Apologies for the inevitable disappointment - bad timing I'm afraid :-(

Regards
Karen
