Kent Lookup Requests / Re: baptism's in Maidstone
« on: Wednesday 14 August 13 16:28 BST (UK)  »
Checking transcriptions for all Saints, Maidstone (1558-1926), the only KERRISON baptism is this one
1792 Mar. 26 William son of John & Catherine KERRISON (Born 22 Mar.)

which could fit with the father of your Robert William!

There are some CARRISON baptisms, but they do not fit. I think All Saints would have been the only church in Maidstone at that time, so perhaps he was not baptised or perhaps it was at another parish (his mothers?) or it could have been a non-conformist ceremony.

If it is the one in Kent it seems to come under Pembury parish. The Tunbridge Wells Family History Society http://www.tunwells-fhs.co.uk/ is a good place to start. They appear to answer queries through their Guestbook.

Scans of the registers are on the Medway CityArk site
http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/query/results/?Mode=Search&PathList=%2FZ4a_Medway_Ancestors%2F%0A&SearchWords=&DateList=

(Couldn't get the shrink link to work for some reason)

Kent Lookup Requests / Re: Joseph Alexander 1772

Transcriptions I have for Hollingbourne PR's give these baptisms around that time;
1776 10/26 Jemima D of Joseph & Lydia ALEXANDER
1778 06/10 Ann D of Joseph & Lydia ALEXANDER twin of Susan
1778 06/10 Susan D of Joseph & Lydia ALEXANDER twin of Ann

which would appear to be the same family you have found in Frinsted.

However, although there are a lot of ALEXANDER baptisms in Hollingbourne, I cannot find a suitable Joseph baptism around 1772. There are 2 Joseph baptisms;

1809 01/29 Joseph S of Joseph & Ann ALEXANDER
1797 07/02 Joseph S of Thomas & Mary ALEXANDER

I've checked the transcriptions for the baptism registers at Minster, but can't see a suitable baptism at that date for a William Harris. As Nanny with Rosie says the Dockyard church is another possibility, some records are online here
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~penney/hm%20dockyard%20church/main%20page.htm
but do not go up to the date you are interested in. As far as I know later registers would have to be looked at in the archives in Maidstone.
I also had a quick check of other Sheppey parishes - Harty, Queenborough, Leysdown, but could not see a suitable baptism.

Thanks for the list. I had missed the 1812 baptism, but that is of a child of the 'other' couple. I've been through my list of what is now 15 children and am reasonably satisfied that I have allotted them to the right couples based on naming practices, dates of birth and places of baptisms. I can now go ahead with more research on the family, especially trying to go back from Henry BRYANT and Mary GLENDALL (JAY), now I'm pretty sure I've got the right family. Especially as 'my' Richard Edward was born before the marriage of the 'other' couple.
Henry BRYANT was a Purser Steward on HMS Pegasus and Andromeda which is another line of research to find out where he was likely to have travelled.

Thanks for that - was that from familysearch? It falls in the gap (6 Feb 1791 – 5 Jun 1801) of the registers available on FindMyPast. Yes, it must be the 'other couple as one of the children I have was baptised William West BRYANT. I will go through the children now and try to allocate them to the different families.

Thanks again

Devon / BRYANT Family, Stoke Damerel
« on: Thursday 04 April 13 10:11 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace my BRYANT ancestors living in Stoke Damerel at least from the 1780's. My 3xgreat grandfather Richard Edward BRYANT was born around 1790 in Stoke Damerel (Devonport). He was a shipwright who moved to Chatham, Kent for work. Through the parish registers on findmypast I have identified a probable candidate born to a Henry & Mary BRYANT, right date, right place, and from there found:

Henry BRYANT (Seaman, HMS Pegasus) married Mary JAY (widow) 4 Jan 1788
and also Mary's first marriage
Robert JAY (Seaman, HMS Hero) married Mary GLENDALL 24 Apr 1781
both marriages Stoke Damerel

I also have the Royal Navy will for Henry BRYANT which mentions his wife Mary.

Through a combination of findmypast and familysearch records (there is a gap in the registers available on FindMyPast and also some non-conformist baptisms) I have found 14 children born to a Henry & Mary BRYANT in the Stoke Damerel - Devonport area between 1788 and 1808. Some of the dates I have for births and baptisms make it unlikely that they can be all from the same couple, but I cannot find a marriage for another Henry BRYANT & Mary in the area.

Eight of the children appear to have died in infancy, but I have managed to trace descendants from some of the children.

I have tried to keep this message short, but I have collected a lot of information on possible relatives. Is anyone else researching the BRYANT family from this area and could help me sort these children out?

I think this will be the marriage of Eliza ROGERS to John Turley FULLAGER, 6 Dec 1840, St. Mary Chatham;

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0t9i/

which is why she was not with her parents on the 1841 census.
