Suffolk Lookup Requests / Re: St Mary, Barking - FOX
« on: Friday 16 November 12 07:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, sorry a bit late getting back

First, thanks so much Annes for confirming those original entries; pity it throws the 2 problems straight back at me again.

Now Keziah2 here is the data I am trying to prove:

Samuel Fox (c. 25 Mar 1781 Crowfield) son of Marjoram Fox (b. 1731, bu 28 Oct 1788 Coddenham) & Isabella Stokes (b. 1732; bu 8 Aug 1812 Coddenham.  He married 4 Dec 1799 Crowfield to Amy Gibbons (c. 25 Mar 1781 Woodbridge). Samuel was a labourer/maltster in Crowfield, Little Stonham, Needham market area.  He died 6 Jul 1846 at Needham market

The children I thought were his are:

  • John Fox ch. 2 Mar 1800 Winston (now in dispute as father is John not Samuel confirmed by Annes) but mother is Amy Gibbons.  He married Sarah Sheldrake on 9 Aug 1825 at Barking, was a maltster at Needham market; died there 25 Aug 1872
  • Mary Fox ch 21 Mar 1802 Gosbeck; no further record found
  • Amy Fox ch 31 Jul 1803 Gosbeck married 10 Oct 1833 Coddenham to Henry Abel (ch 22 Jun 1806 Barking)
  • Marjoram Fox ch 25 Jul 1805 Gosbeck married 17 Apr 1828 Stonham Aspall to Harriet Folkhard.  He was buried on 16 Jan 1840 in Stonham Parva
  • Samuel Fox b ~ 1806 (this is one I was hoping to find christening record for); married 10 June 1828 Wattisham to Maria Bullett (ch 9 Mar 1806 Wattisham);  was an ag lab in Ringshall, died there 21 Aug 1875; census records show birthplace as Needham Market, Barking  & Crowfield- Samuel is the 3rd ggf I'm following to the present
  • William Fox ch 6 Dec 1807 Barking- confirmed by Annes; probably died 18 June 1808 confirmed by Annes
  • Sarah Fox ch 28 Nov 1808 Barking; bu 5 June 1809 confirmed by Annes
  • William Fox ch 25 May 1810 Barking; no further record found
  • Elizabeth Fox ch 6 Dec 1812 Barking; no further record found
  • Eliza Fox b. 1814 Needham Market; no christening record found; married 5 Nov 1835 Barking to James Nunn; they lived in Needham Market she died Mar 1891; she was present as Eliza Nunn at the deaths of both her father Samuel Fox and her brother Samuel Fox (above)
  • Maria Fox ch 11 Aug 1816 Crowfield; no further record found
  • George Fox ch 30 Aug 1818 Crowfield; no further record found
  • James Fox ch 26 Dec 1819 Crowfield; buried 10 Apr 1820 Crowfield

So there are gaps in my data.  I still feel that the first John Fox is a son of Samuel (not John) & Amy Gibbons; because no record yet found of another Amy Gibbons marryng a John Fox; and he was a maltster (like Samuel) in Needham Market.

As for Samuel b~1804-1806, he's tied to the family by his sister Eliza Fox (married name Nunn); but no known and confirmed christening;  What is frustrating is that there are perhaps another 10 or so published "Fox" family trees all with his christening date as 6 Dec 1807 Barking which we now know is in fact for a William confirmed by Annes

Any help or advice greatfully received
Regards
Dennis

Hi Dennis
Great that you got in touch.  Indeed we appear to be on the same Fox family hunt.  We have a lot to share!!
You say Elizabeth Marjoram sometimes known as Mary m. John Fox in 1716.  Indeed Marjoram Fox b. 1731 (not 1721????) burial 28 Oct 1788 had father John mother Mary according to this burial record: Marjoram FOX  abode Creeting  buried 28 Oct 1788 (age 57 married man; son of John & Mary late Marjoram) at Coddenham St Mary.  So do you know why Elizabeth & Mary are the same?
I have 2 current problems:
1. Samuel Fox birth ~1806.  There is no record I can find other than the one everyone is copying giving a baptism on 6 Dec 1807; the actual original & transcribed record at Barking (Needham Market) is for William Fox not Samuel with parents Samuel & Amy.  What is Suffolk record 1677187?? Please tell me
2. I believe Samuel Fox & Amy Gibbons had ~13 children.  The first John FOX b. 8 Feb 1800 ch.2 Mar 1800 at Winston Suffolk; however the baptism record gives father John not Samuel mother Amy Gibbons.
Can't wait to get more details from you.  Incidentally the last Marjoram Fox just died in Sale, Victoria on 26 Jul 2012 (b. 29 May 1924)
My late wife was Pamela May Fox; 6th ggdau of John Fox & Mary/Elizabeth Marjoram
Her pedigree is:
Pamela May Fox 1951-1997; Harold Francis Fox 1925-1971; Harold Michael Fox 1897-1963; George Fox 1861-1949; Robert Fox 1831-1911; Samuel Fox 1806-1875; Samuel Fox 1773-1846; Marjoram Fox 1731-1788; John Fox 1718-1788

PS we should probably get in touch by email)

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Re: St Mary, Barking - FOX

Thanks Alan for looking that up for me.

Can I ask if the Suffolk FHS CD is a typed transcript or is it composed of photographs of pages of the original handwritten registers?  You see, this is my problem; what if the original transcriber made a mistake writing down "William" instead of "Samuel"?  Samuel Fox b ~ 1807 did exist and I've followed his family group to the present.

How can I get a look at copies of the original baptismal record?

Also are you sure about this entry you sent to me:  Elizabeth bap 9-12-1807; this doesn't seem right

One other request please as I have another similar problem with this family group.  Can you look-up the following; St Andrew's, Winston record? The father in the findmypast record is "John" but I think it should be "Samuel"
Parish Record Collection - Baptism Record Entry: 6074 bap 2 Mar 1800; John Fox son Father: John ???????????? Mother: Amy Parish: Winston, St Andrew Notes: Born 8 Feb. Late Gibbon
Record source: Suffolk Baptism Index Data provider: Suffolk Family History Society

Thanks again
Dennis

Hi Robert
I have just today come across your posting.  I believe that John GIBBONS & Amy GARNHAM are my wife's 5th GGPs.
I think their daughter Amy GIBBONS was bap 25 Mar 1781 at St Mary, Woodbridge.  She married Samuel FOX on 4 Dec 1799 @ Crowfield and died at Needham Market on 18 July 1849.  The couple had 13 children.

I would love to share information and confirm what I have.

Suffolk Lookup Requests / St Mary, Barking - FOX
« on: Thursday 01 November 12 02:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I am interested in checking a St Mary's, Barking baptism record for a Samuel FOX bap. 6 Dec 1807 father: Samuel mother: Amy.
I have found the following record on findmypast for William FOX not Samuel FOX but I'm convinced this is a transcription error

Parish Record Collection - Baptism Record; Entry: 6094; 6 Dec
1807; Forenames: William; Surname: Fox; Relationship: Son Father: Samuel; Mother: Amy; Barking, St Mary, County: Suffolk; Record source: Suffolk Baptism Index; Data provider: Suffolk Family History Society

Other children on the St Mary, Barking bap register are: Sarah FOX Entry 6091, bap 28 Nov 1808; William FOX Entry 6095, bap 25 May 1810 & Elizabeth FOX Entry 6064, bap 6 Dec 1812

I would appreciate a look-up if anyone has access to a copy of the original hand-written records

Thanks in advance
