Westmeath / James Kelly, Westmeath
« on: Friday 29 October 10 21:33 BST (UK)  »
My own family are all from Wexford Town but my cousins wife has just found that her gt.gt.grandfather was from Westmeath.  He was James Kelly, born 1840 but moved to St Helens, Lancashire and married Ann Dayley in August 1866.  This is new territory for me.  Can anyone help.  Anne

Dublin / Musical Theatre around 1915 in Dublin
« on: Wednesday 05 May 10 12:09 BST (UK)  »
My father was born in Wexford 1905.  His father who was a harbour pilot, took him to Dublin for the Pilot boat to have repairs.  He said they went to the theatre that night.  Sat up in the 'gods' and a beautiful lady in a blue dress came on stage and sang Velia.  He said everyone joined in with her.  She obviously left a lasting impression as he was 86 when he died, but still smiled each time he told me me the story.  Does anyone know who she could have been.  I think he was about 9-12 when he went on the trip.

Wexford / School leaving age late 1800s
« on: Saturday 20 March 10 19:20 GMT (UK)  »
Can someone please tell me what the average school leaving age was at the end of the 1800s.  I have been sent some records for my grandfather and I hope, his brothers.  It dosn't give his leaving date as I was told that he had a row with one of the Christian Bros and walked out.  If the family story is correct, he had started to train as a teacher.  So I need to know how old would he have to be to do that. Help...Anne ???

Wexford / Forbidden Poem
« on: Saturday 26 September 09 14:03 BST (UK)  »
When I was a child, my grandfather would recite a poem he had found, proberbly in the late 1880s to early 1890s.  He told us the poem had been sold for a penny a sheet and then later that day or the following day, all the copies were taken back as it was banned. He had learned it word for word and it had stayed in his memory for life.   I wish I had listened more carefully to the words instead of being entranced by his rich irish tones.  I seem to remember it was about a man falling asleep under a tree and have a feeling it was a rebel verse.  If anyone else has knowledge of it I would love to read the words again.  Grandad was born 1882 and left to become a sailor in the mid 1890s.  Anne

I have just received a marriage certificate for my grandparents.  They both came from Wexford Town but married in Dublin.  I have tried searching for photographs of St Nicholas Church but to no avail.  If anyone can show a site I can go on I would be gratful as I would like to add the picture  to the family tree. Wexford / Furlongs Wexford
« on: Monday 22 June 09 12:31 BST (UK)  »
I have tried many times to find family of my grandfather through his paternal line.  Hope to have more luck with his mothers family.  She was Mary Furlong, married John Walsh, a ships captain.  My grandfather John Joseph was born March 1882 in King Street, Wexford Town.  I know he had a brother James and I think also Thomas but as I don't know granddads pecking order in the family, I have no idea how long his parents were married or even if they were married in the town or perhaps someother part of the county.  One lady helping me suggested it could have been Bannow as there was a marriage shown in Bannows parrish records of JohnWalsh and Mary Furlong.  I did post a picture on the Walsh site hoping someone might spot a family resemblence but beginning to think he may take after the Furlong line.  Hers's hoping someone thinks he looks familiar.  Anne
