Canada Lookup Request / Re: Please help! Birth certificate request
« on: Saturday 06 April 24 19:22 BST (UK)  »
Do you know if he was living in Canada in 1911, please?  Do you know the name of his wife (if he in fact did marry, in Ontario)?  A Malcolm Alexander Smith was born in 1904 in Toronto; perhaps he was your ancestor.

Added: Sandra’s referenced website might also have Ontario birth and marriage records.

Added again:  If he left Canada at a young age, family could have mentioned Toronto as his birthplace rather than a smaller, lesser known neighbouring town.

The Common Room / Re: Ancestry - merging my trees?

Biggles50, thank you very much for providing the thorough instructions.  I took a screen shot for future reference.  I’m a bit wary of Roots Magic but perhaps our older son can help me with it.

Thank you again; you and Martin have motivated me.

Yes, Martin, it is high time that I finally decide which electronic device to purchase.  ;) I’ve mainly put it off because I sit in our living room using my mini iPad late into the night, when all is quiet and there are no distractions.  Something larger would be difficult to hold for an extended period of time and would be in the way of our snuggling cat.  ;D

Perhaps we can afford a new iPad and a larger device.  I will check into it.  Thank you for the unintentional slight nudge to get me motivated.  ;)  Lisa

The Common Room / Ancestry - merging my trees?
« on: Friday 05 April 24 02:18 BST (UK)  »
I believe I’ve read that trees on Ancestry cannot be merged.  Until I purchase genealogy software, I will continue to use Ancestry for my trees.

I started a few trees a few years ago (for four of my branches, and for OH’s branches).  A couple of years ago, for various reasons, I started new trees for these branches.  I would now like to combine the two Stuart trees with each other, the two Mumford trees with each other, etc. without losing any details and more importantly, without creating duplicate folks.  If we cannot merge trees, might there be a way to gather facts without taking hours to compare, for example, the two Stuart trees with each other?  Thank you for any guidance.  Lisa

The Common Room / Bernard Fowley, Manorhamilton, Ireland to Ontario, Canada
« on: Friday 05 April 24 01:22 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find details about Bernard Fowley.  According to his headstone on FindAGrave, Bernard was born c1787, Manorhamilton, Ireland.  He died 10 April 1875 and was buried in Christ Church Cemetery, Woodbridge, Ontario, Canada.  It appears that Bernard had a daughter, Ellen, who was born c1823 in Sligo, Ireland.  Ellen was also buried in Christ Church Cemetery.  I have two (small) DNA matches with folks who have Ellen in their trees.

I believe Bernard was my ancestor’s father.  My ancestor, Sarah Fowley, was born in Sligo, Ireland (according to her daughter’s death certificate) c1821 and settled in Ontario.  We believe Sarah had at least one sibling, James, who also settled in Ontario.  They lived in various towns/villages near Toronto; Sarah and her daughters eventually settled in Toronto.  According to the 1861 census, Sarah married James Stuart in 1840, location unknown.  We, with immense help from RootsChatters, have found numerous facts (after c1850) about Sarah, her husband and their children.

I have not been able to find Bernard prior to 1875.  I’ve searched for Fowley, Foley, and Fowl*.  I would like to learn more about Bernard, hoping to find proof that he was or wasn’t Sarah’s father.  Thank you, Lisa.  :)

The Common Room / Re: Ancestry tree: finding individual?
« on: Wednesday 03 April 24 20:02 BST (UK)  »
Last year, I posted a topic asking which type of electronic device to purchase and have not had the opportunity purchase one.  (My mini iPad is giving me problems.)  I’m glad that I waited - I don’t think I brought up any questions about genealogy programs.  Thank you very much for the advice, fhtess1165!

Thank you very much, Biggles50 and Martin.  I usually stay away from complex/enormous trees.  I have a difficult time believing that there aren’t errors in the super-large trees.  I’m sure there are great researchers but I do prefer looking at smaller trees.  Thank you both for your guidance.

Martin, thank you very much for the suggestion.  My only trees are on paper and Ancestry.  I’ve been very interested in purchasing software so that I don’t have to rely on a pay site for my trees and can have an electronic tree.  Once I finally decide if I will purchase another iPad, laptop or computer, I will definitely look into purchasing family tree software.  At that time, I can download the gedcom.

Thank you again, Lisa

United States of America / Re: A brick wall - maybe a fake name???

I intended to continue with this topic in August; I’m finally back.

Re James Whatley Collier…
Perhaps you’ve already found the following, but mentioning it in case it helps -

Death certificates for James’ children (providing that I found his actual children)
On Frank’s certificate, the father’s name is John Wesley Collier
On Rhonda’s certificate, the father’s name is a closer match, James Watling Collier

Perhaps at some point James started using different given names, or whomever filled out Frank’s certificate made an error?
