« on: Saturday 30 March 13 18:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

My Great Grandmother is buried in Square A at Manor Park Cemetery, Sebert Road.

I have looked at the cemetery map but there is no Square A.

Would anyone know where Square A is ?

Thank you in advance.

The Common Room / Abel/Abell family. Who was the father ?
« on: Thursday 31 January 13 12:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

Can someone help me with my Abel/Abell family please. I am looking for the baptism of Ann Abel/Abell.

According to her burial (as Ann Cuff) 27th Nov 1843 Lambeth & 1841 census in Lambeth, she was born in 1772.  The census says she was not born in the same county.

I recently saw the Will of her sister Mary Abell 1838 in Lambeth. Mary names her sister as Ann Cuff. She also names her father as Henry and her siblings as Susannah Pillivant/Pillifant, Israel Abell, Henry Abell, Joseph Abell, John Abell, Jane Abell. She also names her sister in law as Hannah. Hannah's children are Richard, Robert, Margaret, Jane.

Looking at the IGI i believe i have found the family came from Hatherleigh, Devon. An Anne Able was baptized there in 1772 to parents Israel & Mary though. Also the siblings named in the Will were baptized there as Able, Abel/Abell to the same parents.

The problem is that Mary names her father as Henry in her Will if i have read it correctly.

London and Middlesex / Fanny Higgins lookup
« on: Friday 08 June 12 20:29 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I am looking for Fanny Higgins after the 1891 census.

She was born in Chorleywood, Rickmansworth, Herts in 1858 as Fanny Brister. She is living in Shoreditch with husband Walter William Higgins in 1891.

I think this is the Walter William Higgins in the probate index in 1896 who died in the River Thames off Putney on the 12th Dec 1895. His widow is named as Fannie Higgins.

There is a death for a Fanny Higgins 2nd Q 1909 in Islington age 55. If this is her where is she in 1901 ?

The Common Room / The Will Annexed question
« on: Monday 07 May 12 11:32 BST (UK)  »
Hello

My ancestors probate record of 1869 states that it is :

Letters of Administration (with the will annexed).

Is it possible to obtain an Annexed Will via the Leeds District Probate Registry just like you would with a normal Will.

Armed Forces / Is it the same man in different Hampshire Battalions ?
« on: Wednesday 09 November 11 20:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

Thomas Sturges was born in Margate, Kent in 1882. I have no info on him after 1901.

The 1901 Census has him as Thomas Sturgess born Margate, Kent age 19 and in the 2nd Hampshire Regiment.

A WW1 Medal card has a Thomas Sturges in the 10th Battalion Hampshire Regiment. This Thomas received a Distinguished Conduct Medal.

Are they the same person ?

Armed Forces / New Romney Light Dragoons c1796
« on: Thursday 03 November 11 14:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

My ancestor John Richardson married in Canterbury, Kent in 1796. He was stated as being a soldier on the marriage record.

I have seen on a website that in 1795 The Canterbury Barracks were built & finished, and on the 1st of October, the New Romney Light Dragoons, commanded by Colonel C. DERING, marched in as the first occupiers.  I believe they were also called The New Romney Corps of Fencible Cavalry (or Duke of York's Own Fencible Cavalry).

Were the soldiers who joined The New Romney Light Dragoons all from New Romney in Kent ?

Also are there records relating to the New Romney Light Dragoons available anywhere that would have John's birthplace ?
