Hello,

I have had some luck and help with the Shropshire Archives, who have posted me [for a fee, but worthwhile] the 12pp trial and conviction to 10 years transportation, for housebreaking, to Van Diemen's Land of my gggg grandfather Joseph Kendall in 1841. He was a labourer, from the Parish of Hales Owen.

Anyhow,  I will be in England [from Tasmania - Van Diemen's Land!] in Sept and early Oct 2010 and would very much like to meet any Kendalls and/or Kendall descendants, or those with local knowledge, in the area between Hales Owen, Romsley and Hunnington.

For example, it would be great to meet people  who might be related from the siblings Joseph likely left behind. Also I am hoping that there might be some buildings still standing that are mentioned in the records that I could visit.

Joseph's father,  William Kendall whose house was from  the township of Romsley.
Joseph, in Tasmania, said his native place was "Houston, Shrophire"
but he was apprehended in the Bulls Head public house in Hunnington and it seems he lived at the time at Back Lane, Hunnington.

I have his Tasmanian convict indent record if you are related and interested, let me know.

Joseph Kendall
Convicted 18 Oct 1841 Salop Shrewsbury
Travelled from Portsmouth on ship MOFFATT (3). Arrived 28 Nov 1842 # 39579
Joseph Kindle married Sarah Ann Cox  6/5/1863 (born 1843 aged 20) when he was aged 38, born 1824/5.
Died: 31/1/1877 Ulverstone, Tasmania, Aged 52

It would be great to map these locations, understand more about what happened and see the places where an ancestor came from.

Julie

hi and thanks GreyonGrey

I have been online a bit and found that likely all my 12 [yes 12] convict ancestors trial etc records pre their arrival in Australia [I have their Australian documentation] seem to be available on ancresty.com  of which I am not [yet] a member.

eg: Charles and wife, Hannah, McKenzie.

[1]
Name: Chas McKenzie Date of Trial: Summer 1815 Trial Year: 1815 Location of Trial: Nottinghamshire, England Sentence: Death Crime: See Image Date of Execution or Release: See Image

Name:   Hannah McKenzie
Date of Trial:   Summer 1815
Trial Year:   1815
Location of Trial:   Nottinghamshire, England
Sentence:   Death
Crime:   See Image
Date of Execution or Release:   See Image

So I think I likely need to join ancestry.com to access the 12 records.

I am trying to work out if it is better for me, with  Australian, Scottish, English and Irish ancestry [and no USA  or Canada connections] - to join the Australian Ancestry.com or UK one.
phew.

Lanarkshire / Re: John McGough b1846, Glasgow - Can't find birth cert.
« on: Sunday 29 August 10 00:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello again

I am now hoping to find the death records for the brothers of John McGough (1845 - 1885) :

Frances McGeough    b 5/12/49
Philip McGeogh    b23/06/51

I am yet to find the family, or who was left in it... in the 1861 census - will likely only be Francis McGough (father b1818 died 1881 aged 63) and son John McGough (born 1845 married 1875 died 1885).

What I have found to date, thanks in great part to your advice and help, is outlined below and in next post,
Many thanks, Julie

Hello

The photos are truly amazing - thanks very much for the links.

I have these places for where my ancestors lived from 1850s to 1905 in Glasgow from the various census and bdm, and am trying to piece together their situation, now realising it is possible to do so a bit thanks to local knowledge and photos, etc, and in this digital age.

Places some McGoughs lived 1850s  to  1905 :

(1851) 71 Bridgegate Blackfriars
(1861 census) haven’t found them on Scotlands People sencus for 1861 yet – why can’t find them?
(1871)13 pine or Kirk st  ?? Calton
(1881) 38 St Andrews Sq

(1891) 3 canning st Bridgeton
(1901) 19 Sandyfaulds St Hutchesontown
(1905) 438 Sth York st, Kinning Park

Here is his birth - finally!

BIRTH OF JOHN MCGOUGH 24 November 1845
Roman Catholic
Transcribed as: 1845 MCGROCH, JOHN [S.C.A. Births MP 0062 00001 00002 00005 00343-031 Glasgow, St Andrews.

P341 - 2
Names of children: John
Legitimacy: lawful
1845 names of parents: Francis McGrouch & Ann Martema
When born: 24 November 1845
When baptized: 27 November 1845
1845 names of sponsors: James Boyle & Helen Cogans [?]
Name of clergyman: Thomas Leady [?]

but what a lot I have learnt from you about the crowded conditions in Glasgow and their district in particular,

and that John had 2 siblings who died young as did his mother. He was not an only child. I need to digest it all.

Also that he was born a Roman Catholic but married as a Presbyterian. Was this common?

when he married he was living at 38 st Andrews Square - was that a healthier location ?

The last time I can find the Mc in the McGough in the family was in 1920 by my great grandfather David signing his mother Helen McGough's death cert. The Mc was it seems forgotten until recently.

B. 24/11/1845 - bapt. 27/11/1845   MCGROCH   JOHN. Parents: FRANCIS MCGROCH/ANN MARTEMA

is anyone else able to get to the  '1 credit needed' stage?
