Also that he was born a Roman Catholic but married as a Presbyterian. Was this common?

Not common but not all that rare either .... although the marriage would have caused some problems in the eyes of his church

Quote
when he married he was living at 38 st Andrews Square - was that a healthier location ?

Sadly no, it was only a few hundred yards from the Briggait (northwards up the Saltmarket towards Glasgow Cross).

The area today can be seen on the maps available on the internet but almost nothing of the areas remain as that part of the city was one of the first to be demolished in the slum clearances which started in the 1860's. Over and above that work several Rail companies built lines through there and with that, like the motorway work which came along a century later, several streets disappeared almost completely.

If you have a look at the Virtual Mitchell Photographs you will see the conditions which even after the slum clearances of the 1860's were still being described as slums only 30 years later

Is an 1857 map of the area overlaying a modern view on Google which will give you an idea of the area and the changes.

Never mind as early as 1890 - this image was taken just 100 yards from where I lived and in 1963 when I was 16.  That's only 47 years ago!!  :o

I played in worse when staying with relatives in the Gorbals in the late 60's (1960's that is  ::) )

Still its amazing that conditions such as those pictured are quickly forgotten when people reminisce about "The Good Old Days"

Hello

The photos are truly amazing - thanks very much for the links.

I have these places for where my ancestors lived from 1850s to 1905 in Glasgow from the various census and bdm, and am trying to piece together their situation, now realising it is possible to do so a bit thanks to local knowledge and photos, etc, and in this digital age.

Places some McGoughs lived 1850s  to  1905 :

(1851) 71 Bridgegate Blackfriars
(1861 census) haven’t found them on Scotlands People sencus for 1861 yet – why can’t find them?
(1871)13 pine or Kirk st  ?? Calton
(1881) 38 St Andrews Sq
(1889_ Sth Wellington St
(1891) 3 canning st Bridgeton
(1901) 19 Sandyfaulds St Hutchesontown
(1905) 438 Sth York st, Kinning Park

Hello again

I am now hoping to find the death records for the brothers of John McGough (1845 - 1885) :

Frances McGeough    b 5/12/49
Philip McGeogh    b23/06/51

I am yet to find the family, or who was left in it... in the 1861 census - will likely only be Francis McGough (father b1818 died 1881 aged 63) and son John McGough (born 1845 married 1875 died 1885).

What I have found to date, thanks in great part to your advice and help, is outlined below and in next post,
Many thanks, Julie
