John McGough b1846, Glasgow - Can't find birth cert.

Hello,

I am trying to find the birth record for my gg grandfather JOHN MCGOUGH.  He died in Glasgow in 1885 aged 39.

Why can’t I find it online!? Have tried all spellings I think..

Can anyone help/advise?

Have you managed to find him in the earlier censuses? I can see him and Helen living together in 1871:

There's a good chance that the reason you cannot find the birth record is that his parents may have become members of what were known as the Dissenting Churches (his marriage was in accordance with the United Presbyterian Church). Civil Registration did not start in Scotland until 1855 and the Parish records currently available on Scotlands People are for the established Church of Scotland with some recently added Roman Catholic records. The Dissenting churches records are not yet generally available online although some of them can be found on the LDS site.

I have tried searching for his birth on IGI with just John - no surname and then Ann Mortimer for mother. Nothing shows unfortunately

and a possible sibling for him

Bridget McGough (parents Francis McGough & Ann Mortimer) born 17 Dec 1855 Clyde, Glasgow.

If you can find this record on Scotlands People 1855 was a "golden" year for information and would give much more information about the family.

I have birth records to Helen McGough [nee Hill] of Peter's birth 1881, David's birth  1881[my g grandfather], and Mary's birth 1889 [not sure who father was]. Didn't get the records  for the others yet:  Annie, Nellie and William.

Just saw I don't have the 1861 census for them!

oh, I meant I have the '1885' birth info of David Storer McGough [great grandfather] - year his father John McGough died.

  That's a great find Falkryn on the 1855 birth for a possible sister to John.

This is the one to look at to see much more detail on the family!
