The Common Room / Re: Free Francis Frith photos Ancestry.

From comments on this on FB etc., I believe you can save images to your tree, but that is all.  You cannot download off Ancestry.   And as we all know, none of this gets added when using the GEDCOM.

I do find this whole thing rather odd as ALL the Francis Frith photos are copyrighted!!!

The Common Room / Re: Not Sure How I Feel About This...
« on: Sunday 14 June 15 16:31 BST (UK)  »
about 8 years ago I finally found my mothers aunts and uncles.  She had been born about 5 months after parents married and I think they parted not long after.

Now they all knew about their brother/uncles child.  So no problem there.  But that was it.  They just did not really want to know me.

I was an still am quite upset by this.  I am an only child (of 2 only children) so I do not have lots of family.  Was so excited when I found these people only to feel quite rejected.

The worst is that although most live in Hampshire and I live in London, I was told at the time by the one member who was very kind.  That the granddaughter of one of my uncles actually lived in the same area of London as me, in fact just roads away.  I never pursued the name of the road.

While I am utterly disappointed, I feel this lack of contact is actually their loss not mine.  They are obviously not very kind people.  But I know that many of my friends and the little family I do have know and have benefitted from my own kindness and help in many ways.

Not too sure what you mean about Public or Private.  Never heard of this type of thing.  What you will get are sections for different denominations.

Hi Chreadie

I have sent you a PM (Private Message) which includes my email address

Look forward to hearing from you.

Am at present having loads of work done on the house, so am not going now to be online until at least Saturday evening or Sunday morning.

Cheers

Christine

Hi

Firstly you need to know that in theory you can call yourself any name you like as long as it is not for nefarious purposes.  My mother was Julia, always known as Rita.

However, with surname changes like this it could be a number of reasons, just 2 listed

1: falling out with family

2: money - he was asked by a close older family friend to change his name to theirs for a legacy

I had a much older cousin who changed her name and for neither of the above.  She was in constant contact with her father.  She just probably thought her name was not 'exotic' enough for an Air Stewardess.  But following her name change, she then married (under new name so I am assuming her change was legal) and she ended up being Elizabeth Taylor.  Sadly not the film star, but she was certainly glamorous enough.

Yes. as long as it is not for fraudulent purposes you can call yourself anything you like.

I had an older cousin who changed her name, and then married so after 2 name changes she became by co-incidence Elizabeth Taylor!

What it appears that this site has done it get all the available war records and put them on their site.  And then charge for the privilege of using their site.

They have NOTHING that cannot be found on others sites.

So, as for WW1, if Ancestry etc., does not have it, it does not exist.

We have always been told that only 30% of WW1 records survived WW2.  A lady from the National Archives was on telly about 4 weeks ago and she actually confirmed that it is only about a 25% survival rate for these records.

London and Middlesex / Re: Photos wanted
« on: Saturday 10 January 15 21:22 GMT (UK)  »
Are you on Facebook, if not do join. There are several excellent pages dedicated to Battersea and Wandsworth.  Some great up to date and many historical photos as well.  And if what you want is not there, all you need to do is ask and someone will more often than not come up with the pictures you want.

Do not be put off by bad press about FB, when you join, you set your own privacy settings and then apply to join any groups which you might find interesting or can even contribute to.

I belong to several for Battersea and even more in SE London.

GOOD LUCK  :D

London and Middlesex / Re: birth, marrige and death certs

I only ever had a short certificate, until a few years ago (I am 61).  Parents just could not afford the full certificate when I was born.

I also have my paternal grandmothers short certificate too, for same financial reasons.
