Scottish census Info
« on: Tuesday 25 October 05 20:23 BST (UK) »
For some time now I have been trying to research my family tree. I was born in Scotland but my great-grandparents back all come from Ireland, although I have no idea from which part.

If I can give you the information that I have, could you tell me if it would be sufficient to work from. The ancestors are as follows:

Thomas Morrow born approx 1848 married to Helen or Ellen Marshall born approx 1851.

William Kincaid born approx 1840 married to Mary Lang/Long born approx 1832, they were married in Ireland on 14th April 1855/1857. The had a daughter called Helen/Ellen born in Ireland approx 1863. They left for Scotland between 1863 and 1865.

They settled in either Port Glasgow, Greenock or Paisley.

Can anyone help?

celt0603,

I am not clear what information you already have and what you are seeking.

Have you searched the IGI on FamilySearch at:
http://www.familysearch.org

It has the following records:
William KINCAID and Mary LONG had:
*A daughter (unnamed) b 2 Feb 1864, 0148 Glendermot, Londonderry, Ireland
*Margaret b 4 Nov 1865, Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire, Scotland
*Mary b 25 Nov 1867, Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire, Scotland (mother's name as LANG)
*William b 8 Mar 1871, Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire, Scotland

So you now know where William and Mary came from in Ireland - or at least where they were before they moved to Scotland.

Have you searched on (the pay per view site) ScotlandsPeople at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

ScotlandsPeople has online BDM records and also the 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses.

The census records should give a birthplace for your ancestors - however, often this is merely stated as 'Ireland'.  But you could be lucky and get a more precise birthplace in one or more of the censuses.

Scottish death certificates list (if known by the informant) the name and occupation of the father of the deceased, and name and maiden surname of the mother of the deceased.  So if you can find the deaths of your ancestors, you will very likely get back another generation.

So there is plenty of information available for you to research.

Good luck,

JAP

I'm presuming here that by Lankish England they mean Lancashire

Thanks for everyone’s help, much appreciated.

It is possible that Elizabeth Morrow was born in Lancashire if the Morrow’s took the shipping route of Dublin to Preston / Liverpool when they left Ireland.

Can I assume from that information that they came from the South of Ireland?

How can I find out?

Assumptions are dangerous things to make in genealogy  ;D

If you try Scotland people http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk the later census records of 1891 and 1901 are available (its a pay site) and you may also be able to search for and access death records which may give more information.

All irish records prior to 1921 are available through the GRO in Dublin ... who unfortunately are not online (yet)

I am working on this family.  William Kincaid was from Dunnamanagh, Donaghedy Parish, County Tyrone.  He had a brother in the area; namely David Kincaid (m. Margaret Kincaid) who emigrated and died in Port Glasgow.

Please contact me by email.  I am a long time Clan Kincaid researcher and my email address can be found in "recent posts" on the Kincaid-L
list.

Best wishes!

Peter A. Kincaid
Kincaids (Kincade, Kinkaid, Kinkead, etc.) of Counties Londonderry and Tyrone.

The last reply was from 2005 and that person hasn't logged into Rootschat since 2018.
