How can I find a marriage?
« on: Tuesday 25 October 05 20:35 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find the marriage of my great grandparents but I can't find them.
My great grandfather Arthur Corbett (b.1890) moved up to Newcastle and married Jane Short (b.1891) sometime in the early 1910's. My grandma was born in Newcastle and her birth index lists her mother's maiden name as Short. I can't find any marriages between Short and Corbett in this era. They couldn't have married any earlier because that would make my gg's too young. I don't believe they married after 1919 because that's the year my grandma was born, and she was their second child. I have found both Jane's and Arthur's death indexes' and they were listed as Corbett, so why can't I find their marriage? Any ideas?  ???

Regards,

Can you tell us where you have looked for the marriage?

I've looked on 1837 online, Freebmd and Ancestry.co.uk. None of these seem to have anything. Of course I could be doing something wrong, but surely there would be a record somewhere?

This could be Jane's second marriage. Her surname is Short but maybe this isn't her maiden name. Just a thought.
Cartledge, Rushton, Winnington (Salford/Manchester)
Hicks(Manchester, Monmouthshire)

I don't think it would be her second marriage. Her first child was born around 1912ish, that would make her 21. She was quite young to be married with a child at 21, nevermind being married twice with a child at 21.

The indexes at Free BMD & Ancestry aren't complete, but those at 1837 online are scanned images of the original indexes and are therefore complete.
The likelihood of a marriage not being on the index is remote.
If you have checked all the scanned original indexes for all possible dates and couldn't  find them, then I would have thought that the logical conclusion has to be that they weren't married...........

I can only presume they did marry, but it is a possibility that they never did. Something tells me that they did marry and I must be doing something wrong because I cannot find them. I'm going to my local record office soon, so hopefully I can find them...and it'll be so much cheaper.
