Ancestry.com 1851 Census
« Reply #9 on: Friday 14 October 05 09:50 BST (UK) »
I see that ancestry.com have added 1851 to the census search but has anyone managed to get a hit from it? I reckon there's no records added yet. Does anyone know any more about it?

Someone sent me a link on Tuesday, which worked perfectly all day... all the records were there and fully searchable. However, the link stopped working on Wednesday - and the 1851 census seems to have reverted to "coming soon" status.  ???

I think I have been very lucky. I also got the link via a Mailing List and over last weekend I managed to punch a few more bricks out of my Irish rellies brickwall.

Found my family plus two brothers and a sister to the 3x g grandfather. Even discovered that his sister who was living with him and his family plus a lodger had married the lodger by the 1861 census.  :)

Couldn't find any of my STABLES family though. However when I scrolled right down the header page it does tell you that there is quite a number of census areas that were damaged by water and are unreadable. Just my luck they covered a lot of Lancashire including the Manchester area where my guys lived.  :(

Tried all variations of names, dates and ages. When checking the images I applaud the transcribers because some of those pages are so feint I can understand how errors are being made.

Can't wait for the 1841 census to come online.

Yup, I got the link too but I understand it was strictly unofficial!  ;) There's been other threads on the census discussion board) Lucky if you were in the right place at the right time! it worked till midweek, then Ancestry plugged the hole. Hope the authorised version won't be too long anyway....

1851 census on Ancestry.com
« Reply #16 on: Sunday 16 October 05 01:43 BST (UK) »
Not sure if I am on the right board???  I went to the family history library this morning. To have a look at the 1851 census on acestry.com.  Once I logged on I went on to uk census collection at first could not see 1851 census listed but once I went to put in a search and clicked on years I saw 1851 listed. Great I thought now I can find the couple I want !!  Put in the information I had and it came up to say can't find. Then I tired names I knew for sure where on 1851 census and nothing turned up.  Is there a problem with it??  Or had I done something wrong??

I was trying to find a Thomas and Jane Mapplebeck somewherein Yorkshire in 1851.  I know there were Mapplebecks in Yks then but  everytime I tried it keep saying none found!!

It was a good job I did not drive an 1 1/2 hours to just go to library and could not find them. Had to go for an eye appt. for hubby. So I thought I would go to the library while I waited for him.

Anne,

You weren't the only one struggling with Ancestry today...more than once i found someone (after having no luck) just to lose them again.  I did get the message there were problems with the server and the site itself several times.  I can't wait until they have completed the 1851 data as I need it to go further..  I asked to be notified via email once the data is complete..I have the subscription to the UK records only.
