death unregistered at Penrhyn Slate Quarry
« on: Wednesday 26 October 05 12:20 BST (UK) »
My ancestor Richard Davies from Gwaun y Gwial, Llanllechid was killed in an accident at the quarry on Feb.2.1842 according to the Penrhyn archives.
However I am unable to find a death certificate at the Ilington Family History centre and the GRO at Southport can't find it either.  I just wanted to know cause of death.  Any ideas where I should look e.g which newspaper, Coroner where?

You could alway try the Registrar in Caernarfon. If he finds the death, you can order the cert directly from him.

Do you know where Richard is buried? The burial record might give a clue.

Would the Refistrar inCarnarfon have different records to the General registry Office in Southport?

No, but they will have a better local knowledge and are more likely to be able to point you in the right direction.

You could also try the archives in Caernarfon - perhaps there is a list of people killed in the slate quarries, somewhere.

The Penrhyn Archives are in Bangor University and list him as killed I just wanted to know how.  Do you know where I could possibly find a Coroner's report?  Would it be in Caernarfon somewhere?

There was a discussion thread on coroners reports on rootschat a while ago. Can't place it at the moment.

I seem to remember though that the reports were destroyed after a certain time. Again I would suggest asking the archives, if it still exists, it should be there.

Hi Creuddyn,

My ancestors worked in the Penrhyn Quarry from its inception until the early 1900s, and during my research I found most of the deaths at the quarry were either by crushing when there were falls of rock, or by falling off the slate gallery faces.

I believe the records of Penrhyn Quarry hospital exist somewhere, and if you can find them this will almost certainly pinpoint the cause of death.

Re Robert Davies

Penrhyn Quarry Hospital records are at the Caernarvon Archives.

Possible death cert entry - and it is only a possible with it not being in the Bangor district is:-
Llanrwst district  Vol 27 p 115 or 145 for the March quarter of 1842. (Re Freebmd site)

Gathering the Jewels site has scans of the accident books for Dinorwig and Penrhyn but the latter rarely states the circumstances of the accident unfortunately.
Rowland/s- Hughes -Caernarfornshire/Stockport Cheshire
Barnicoat - Cornwall Lancashire Stockport,Cheshire
Jones (!) - Caernarvonshire,NWales  USA - Iowa, Wisconsin, S Dakota.
Thomas - Anglesey, USA Iowa, Oregon

I know this is a long shot since the last post was in 2005.....but here it goes.  Richard Davies is related to me as well.  I recently learned this after researching my DNA and am working to connect the pieces.  I was adopted and started this research about a year or so ago.  I would love to hear from you.  Thank you
