Before looking at other's ideas, I thought Harriett James. Seems I wasn't alone - but really it takes first prize for the most indecipherable writing!!!

Tough one isn't it!  Thanks for your ideas.

All I can really add is that is was the man's witness, therefore most likely to have been a man I think.   The bridegroom was Joseph Jowett and the bride Sarah Ellis;  the second witness was Eliza Ellis, possibly a sister of Sarah's, and the marriage took place at St. George's Leeds, on 8th September 1855.

I used to work in finance & have had to decipher many signatures so I thought I'd give yours a try.
The first name is ROBERT & the surname begins with 'M'. The big thing in the middle that looks like a wire between two poles is 'M'.
The 'R' is a little rough but the second letter is obviously 'O'. The 'B' is a quick hook at the bottom but there.
I have a signature of Clayton Moore (the Lone Ranger) & his small 'e' is written like a capital as in your sample.
The second 'R' is less than expected but when people develop fancy signatures that happens. The 'T' has only a small cross but it's there.
Do you know of any other family or friend name starting with 'M'?
I'll keep at it until I get it or go mad.
Good luck & good hunting.

Hi J.A.M. and thanks very much but please don't let it get you to that stage!!

I have come to the conclusion that this must have been a friend rather than a relative of Joseph's.   It was his second marriage - one of his brothers was witness at the first.   I have even tried to make this signature look like 'Rachel Jowett' - his mother, because she was still alive at the time, but I can't!   In the overall scheme of things I don't suppose it really matters, but it would be nice to know!

Thanks again for your help.   I don't think I would have got 'Robert' - although I did think maybe Herbert or Hubert.   No 'M's' spring to mind.
