Maud Amy Tompkins
« on: Tuesday 01 November 05 14:42 GMT (UK) »
Sorry it is me again ;)

Would anyone be able to tell me where my grandmother was working before my mother was born in 1916? I know she was in service.

In the 1901 census it had my Gran born in August 1886 in Luton, the thing is it doesn't say anything else. Her dad Joseph and mum Sophia are listed as living in Newport Pagnell at this time but I don't think she is with them

Her mother and father Joseph and Sophia Tompkins were both born in Stagsden Beds.

I just wondered if her place of residence or what ever would have been on the census

Thank you (again)

Thank you both, if you cannot help me with my next question I will understand (I think it is a bit to hard for anyone to answer) Do you know how long my Gran stayed with the family.

(it's a bit to personal to say why I would like to know on the open board 8))

Thanks again

I cannot find mention of the Haglla family anywhere not even on the 1901 census online (but knowing me I am looking in the wrong section) It is a strange name!

Hi lambkin

The family name is Hayllas on 1891 & Hayllar on  1881.
Looking at image of 1901 it looks like an 'r' at end so = Hagllar or eqiv.

Search for Richard (no surname) b 1852 Buckinghamshire  Newport

note there's a posting of Richard T Hayllar b 1852 Newport Pagnell on Genes Reunited - by a Simon who has other Hayllar names. try that !!

'R.Hayllor & Sons, grocers, spirit and wine merchants; 8 St John Street & 1 Silver Street' in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire

They are listed in various 21st C Kelly's Directories [i.e 1903/1907/1915 - which is the last one on the web site - and probably on 19th C ones too, though I haven't checked them]

See: http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp

But their employees, of cause, are not listed.  And Maud wouldn't have had the vote then. So may not be listed anywhere - until the 1911 census appears.  However, there may be clues on any birth certs/marriage certs of Maud's?

There may be someone on the Buckinghamshire list who can advise you?

Bedfordshire: Worker [Flitton]; Ames [Kempston]; Manton [Kempston]; Morris [?]; Valentine [Kempston]; Two & Osborn [Cranfield]

Herfordshire and West London: Brown [Kent in early 19th C]; Blackwell.
McCarthy [Clonakilty, County Cork - searching for needles in the haystack!] and LOSTY [Dublin]

Yes, but I am trying to find her later employment she didn't get  married until she was nearly 30 so I am trying to find out what she did until then
