Navy Pensioner
« on: Wednesday 02 November 05 12:05 GMT (UK) »
I have a John O'Brien born 1839, Navy pensioner on the 1881 census (he was 42).
How many years would he have served to become a pensioner from the navy.
This might round down the years that I am looking for John in as unsurprisingly according to Registers of Seamen's Services in the National archives there were quite a few John O'Brien's from Ireland who served.
Thanks
Sharon

There were 2 types of pensions paid to living ex-Navy men. Those were 20-year service pensions and disability pensions [not limited to any term of service].
If you wish to investigate this in detail then the following URL will enable you.

Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.
