Hi Gladys

on the 1851 census Emma is down as living with her daughter Sarah in Blyth and Newsham, Northumberland

Emma is down as Housekeeper to a family called Gibson
Head of the family is an agent colliery

Sorry I cant find Thomas Freeman - he maybe at sea - as he was down as a mariner

If you want me to go forward on the census returns it will be a pleasure - it gives me a break from my lot - just let me know

regards

Gladys1,

You know I can't keep my big nose out of a Cowpen/Blyth/Earsdon question.

And your Freemans are a great example of the complications of place names in an C19th context.

As Fran has discovered, the Freemans were in the following census districts....

C1851.."Blyth and Newsham".
C1861.. Earsdon
C1871..Cowpen.

But in actually for those three censuses, they were never out of Blyth.

Blyth , although a large and developing community, it had as yet, no clout, and as far as censuses were concerned, it was under the sway of other more ancient places.

In 1851 they lived in Ridley Terrace, close to Ridley Street.
This part of Blyth was owned by "lord of the manor",later Lord Ridley ( Blyth's park a gift from him,is named after him, as was the pub,The Ridley Arms.

This part of Blyth was in the "township" of "Blyth and Newsham", a sub-division of the Parish of Earsdon.
( Full name of "township" was " South Blyth and Newsham")

By C1861 they were in South Buildings which was next to Northumberland Street in Blyth. This was very close to where they were in C1851.

Earsdon gets mention because this part of Blyth lay within the territory of Eardson Parish.

Then on to C1871, they have crossed the "border"* and are in Newman Court, next to Victoria Street ( close to where the railway lines crossed Keelman's Row/Turner Street/Regent Street... this area called Cowpen Quay)

Census district is given as Cowpen , but not meaning the Cowpen of today, which is about 2 miles away. It meant the "Cowpen Township" of the Parish of Horton.

So Blyth had grown up straddling the border of two ancient parishes.. Horton to the West and Earsdon to the south. Today the dividing line is Plessey Road then Union Street.

Maybe back to a more relevant angle... while they were in the Earsdon half of Blyth, bapts/marriages and burials would have taken place at St Alban's Eardson. While in the Horton/Cowpen part of Blyth, bmbs would have taken place at St Mary's Horton ( Until such time as satellite churchs like St Cuthbert's and St Mary's were founded in Blyth, and Blyth Links cemetery.

A final note.. age of Thomas on C1871 looks like 63, and enumerator has him recorded "blind for 1 year!.

Sorry about length of above.
