1841 Lewises in Abergavenny
« on: Sunday 06 November 05 13:54 GMT (UK) »

Hi

From parish transcripts and scant family info I have established the following Lewis family:

John Lewis, ironmonger, living in Frogmore Street, Abergavenny
Margaret, wife, b. ~1781
Margaret, dau, b. 1799
John, son, b. 1800
Thomas, son, b. 1802
Edward, son, b. 1804
Anne, dau, b. 1807
Mary, dau, b. 1808
William, son, b. 1810
Charles, son, b. 1812

By 1841 the children might have married and moved out, but one or two might still live at home. I realise that Lewis is an awfully common name in Wales, but can any of them be identified on the census?

I think Edward (above, b. 1804) married Mary Anne Jones and was living in Tudor Street by then.

I found a lovely big advertisement for 'John A and Thos Lewis', ironfounders/mongers at their Frogmore Works in Abergavenny in a Slater's 1859 Trade Directory, and I'm trying to claim them as mine! :D

Cheers
Koromo

Hiya Pritch

They certainly look possible, even with John senior missing and all the ages rounded up/down! Was there by chance a John and/or a Thomas Lewis (sons) aged ~40, ironmongers, in Frogmore Street?

Mind you, I can think of better places to live than over an ironmongers's shop - all that grime and noise!! :D

Thanks muchly
Koromo

I am interested in this family, which may also have included a Henry Lewis. Have you learned any more about them?

Hi LucyLu

I have tracked down all the children of John and Margaret LEWIS of Frogmore Street, Abergavenny,
except for Henry the youngest child!

He was baptised on 17 March 1819 at St Mary's Abergavenny and does appear on the 1841 census with his widowed mother and siblings as pritch19 had found (above).  All his six elder brothers followed their father's trade as an ironmonger and/or similar metal trade (ironfounder, tinsmith, etc.) but I have no idea if Henry followed the family tradition — I've never been able to identify him after 1841.

Do you have a spare Henry LEWIS anywhere? ;)

Hi Koromo,
I do have a 'loose' Henry Lewis, but now I can see that the one you are looking for is not the same one as mine. I have been searching for the parents or siblings of a Henry Lewis for 9 years. I believe he was born between 1810 and 1814. Disappointed we don't seem to have a connection.... I think you might have posted some information attached to my Henry Andrew Lewis m. Mary Prosser on Family Tree? Three of the children that were attributed to that Henry were incorrect, as he emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1844 and was a miner. Also, on the 1841 census, my Henry is with his wife, Mary, rather than his mother. This does help us both in one way though; it eliminates John and Margaret as the parents of my Henry and eliminates Henry Andrew Lewis on FamilySearch, father of Thomas, Phoebe, Henry, William, Sarah, Elizabeth and Hannah as your Henry. I have a giant folder devoted to research on Henry Lewis.... if I find one born 1819 I will be in touch. If in your research you find a Henry b. 1810-1814 let me know!

Hi LucyLu

I'm disappointed too that our Henry LEWISes are different people, but as you rightly say, it does help with the eliminations.

There are some trees on Ancestry which have uploaded the page from the Aberystruth parish register showing Henry and Mary's marriage in 1835.  Do the witnesses (John and Elizabeth DAVIES) provide any sort of clue?

I will certainly keep your Henry in mind while I continue to keep an eye out for mine.

Best of luck
Koromo
