Beware Fakefamily.com
« on: Sunday 06 November 05 16:26 GMT (UK) »
I picked this warning up from the usenet group, and it's worth repeating here.  You know that if you have a website you can make money from advertising.  Every time someone clicks on an advert you get paid.  So it pays to set up sites which will attract a lot of visits as a result of search engines.  And someone has twigged that one of the most lucrative vehicles for this is family history.  Just create a website full of random names and searchers will visit your site when they're searching for their ancestors.  If you go to www.fakefamily.com you'll see that they deny doing anything nasty.  But at best this sort of scam wastes our time and energy, and at worst it has us being led up the garden path.  I can see it getting more sophisticated.  So beware.
