William Dales emigant from Yorkshire to Canada
« on: Wednesday 09 November 05 01:04 GMT (UK) »
I have a William Samuel DALES b May 4 1796. Married  Diane HUNTER-HOLTHAM possibly in Beverly, Yorkshire at St. Mary and St. Nicholas Church. The family emigrated in abt. 1835. They settled in King Township, York County, Ontario. Four of his children (William, Diana, David, and Robert) were born in England, the rest in Canada. My problem is that all my pre Canada information is unsubstantiated, can someone please see if there is any solid info. on this family in England?

Thank you,

GK

Hi GK,

Are you wanting information on this family when they were in Canada or England?

If it's England, perhaps you may get more help posting your message on the Yorkshire board.

Yes, that might be a good Idea. I posted it here because it says "Emigrants to Canada" if it was about people who had emigrated to Canada and were living in Canada it would be "Immigrants in Canada". I have all their info in Canada in spades. However I see your point is well taken and I have posted a request elswhere, but I'm also hoping someone who is knowledgeable about emigration from England to Canada might see this request.

Regards,

GK :)

hi GK

An emigrant is someone who left a place for another so it seems emigrants to Canada implies someone leaving UK and ending up in Canada.

If you want info about passenger lists for ships arriving in Canada from UK, I can give you that. 1835 is well before passenger lists were archived (1865) so it's hit and miss whether or not you'll find one.

This might help in your search:

You might find an ancestor in correspondence of the Secretary of State on immigration for 1817-1857.  There are lists of immigrants, mainly Irish, and entry books re immigration, and assisted emigration to British North America.

These must be ordered offline . Details are given at
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/articles/immcanpre1865.shtml

On TheShipsList website they are including Quebec ship arrivals extracted from contemporary newspapers.

See

http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/Arrivals/index.htm

You can also try inGeneas, the online searchable database of early immigration to Canada. Some records are free, others must be paid for, but the search and it's results are free.
A search engine for InGeneas is at http://ingeneas.com

The Hawke Papers, letterbooks of Chief Emigrant Agent Anthony B. Hawke  are also available. They cover the years 1831 to 1892.

See the searchable database at
http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/db/hawke.htm

If you want to search online, you may have limited success because only a very small percentage of ships to Canada have been  transcribed and put online.

But you can also check out ships passenger lists to  Canada at

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/tocanp01.shtml
