Hi Celia
I saw your post re. looking in Rake Lane Cemetery. I'm looking for my hubby's great grandfather, a mariner ( he lived in The Mariners Homes NB) I didn't realize there was a specific area for mariners. Would you mind telling me whereabouts they are buried? I know through the Wallasey FHS that there aren't as yet any full records, but wondered whether you had built up a list of ones you had found so far. I daren't go in these days on my own but may make use of the Easter hols and get my kids to escort me round the cemetery ( I'm nervous of dogs and have seen quite a few large ones off the leash :-(
Regards
Molly.

Hello Molly As you can see i have copied and pasted your P.M on here. Till you find your way round RootsChat and onto the topic. When you say you didn't realize there was a specific area
For Mariners. Do you mean one for the Mariners in the mariners retirement home. Or a  plot for Mariners only in Rake lane cemetery? The answear to both is no,The plots are according to religion. C.O.E. Catholic, and none conformist. If you want me to find a Grave Stone for you i first have to look up the burial to find the plot. So if you can give me the year of death and Name.I can Hopefully find it as long as you know the burial took place there.

Hi Celia

Thanks, I was floundering a bit at first on this site  ??? and pressing the wrong buttons
You've actually answered my question,in a way thank you.  My search for him was started quite a few years ago, and I then went overseas, so I'm starting up again. I had thought that there was a seperate plot for the mariners from the home. I remembered, after reading your message, that years ago I looked for him by going through the records at landican. At that time I had the wrong date of death, but now have his death cert. I will try to look at Landican records next week in the hope they can tell me his plot. Doesn't stop me being worried about the dogs :-) but I'll take my eldest with me. So if you see a nervous looking person with pen and paper walking around....:-)   Hope you won't mind if I come back to you for more advice, :-)

Hi Molly well done welcome to RootsChat. In regard to you going to Landican I don't think they have the records now but check just in case i am wrong. It would be a lot quicker for you to go to the Town Hall in Birkenhead (if thats nearer for you)Where they have an ever growing supply of records. You can look up burials on film(by years and religion)for Rake lane cemetery and other council cemeteries, quickly when you know the year. You will get the plot number plus other info. The town Hall is only open Thursday Friday and part Saturday. I would suggest that you book a machine as they only have one film reader.
If you go to the first page of this topic you will see i have put a short cut address to my Merchant sea mens M.I's. You never know your might be there. It isn't in any order for various reasons. Come back if you need anymore help i will try to oblige

Celia P.S. I noticed you are researching Mathews in the area my Grandad (father of my mother)lived. It was always said there was no such name as Mathews. My Grandad was Walter Edward Mathew, any connection?

Hi
I am looking for John Richard Owen, born 1866, no idea when he died, he's in the 1901 cenus, unmarried , he was the owner of the Queens Hotel, New Brighton after that date some time. no idea if he married or what!
may have lived to 65, so poss about 1931. Would have thought he was Church of England thro. If it's not enough info, never mind, i'll try and find out more info.

Hello Rob, well the only thing i can advise you to do, is to try and find  the approximate death year you can go to any good reference libraries and look it up on the St Cath's Death index. I can't do a burial look up on the basis that John Owen was born in 1866 and might have lived till he was 65  ;D  So when you have done a bit more research come back and i will see if i can help. When you find out when he died how will you know he was buried in Rake lane cemetery ???

Hi Celia

My Mathews was William George, as far as we know he didn't have an relatives here, but there again I haven't been able to find his birth cert yet, so you never know. On the 1881 census it has him down as being born in Worcester. Also we don't know what religion he was.
Well, I went to the cemetery today, a few little dogs, and a man lurking near the old church building in the middle for no particular reason. I've not been to Birkenhead yet but hope to soon ( off to Liverpool for a couple of hours later this week for more research) and hope to get to the Maritime Museum next week.

Hello Elsbeth that was quick Welcome to RootsChat

To find any graves in Rake lane firstly a look up on film has to be done at the town hall. This will give the plot number,as you have the year it should be easy to find.  Do you know if people you are looking for were Catholics or C.O.E? because they are both on seperate films. Did you just want the information so you can find the grave yourself because you live near the area.Or are you asking me to do a look up for you?the reference room at the T.H is only open for 2 1/2 days a week Thursday Friday and part Saturday. Let me know and i will be happy to help, but i need to book as they only have one machine.

Thanks for your helpful reply. I am almost 100% certain that they were CofE.

No, I was not wanting the info to visit the grave myself, as getting there would be difficult for me. I would however be very grateful for any information that is on the graves themselves,
very many thanks, Elsbeth
