1841 Thomas Powlesland
« on: Wednesday 09 November 05 12:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi, can somebody see if there is a Thomas Powlesland c1774 South Tawton, wife Elizabeth.

They would be in the South Tawton area as that is where they were married and their son George c1820 was born.

Thank you

I can not find them in South Tawton or in Devon.  However, there is a Thomas Powlesland aged 65, son George 24, but wife is Mary....  but as it is common for them to round down ages, I am thinking George is too old.

But I can not find another Thomas or Elizabeth together that age.  There are a few Georges at around 15-20, but they are not with the right parents.

There are no Thomas Powlesland in any other county (at least on British Origins) either.

Sorry couldn't be of more help.  Maybe someone else may have better luck. ???

Welcome.  If there is anything else I can do, let me know :-)

If you go back to the information that you are sure of, and then take it from there  ???  I know how annoying it is.  I can't find my family on the 41 either hehe.

Hi again, just checked my emails and i did have the right names and dates etc.
This is a part of the email that was sent to my contact from a lady in New Zealand, she took the information from a book called ; Powlesland A Devonshire Family - compiled by Helen Amy Dec 1989......we have tried to get hold of this book but apparently it has'nt been published, it sounds like its a paperback leaflet form of book....if that made sense...he he !!

This is the part i was referring to anyway :

It appears that your George Powlesland, bap 1820, died Mar 27 1896, married Susanna Mark - July 4 1843, was the son of Thomas Powlesland/Elizabeth Jackman/Jackham who married Dec 25 1799 South Tawton. Thomas, bap Sep 20 1774 was (according to IGI) son of William Powlesland/Mary Cann.

We know that George married Susanna because we have 1 of their Daughters Birth Certificates.

Does any of this info above help ?  ???

I am thinking that maybe Thomas and Elizabeth are either both dead by 1841, or Thomas is.  As the only Thomas is either with a Mary as a wife and George aged 24... or with a Jane I think.

There are a few Elizabeth's on their own, so it is not possible to know which one is yours.

There are also a few George's, but they are on their own, probably at their workplace on a farm or whatever.. so it is hard to find yours.

I am sorry I have tried, but it is very hard to find them.

Can ANYONE step in and help? Maybe they are hiding on British Origins, but someone else with another 1841 census can help?   ???

Hi Jenny

Thank you ever so much for trying, perhaps they were both dead by 1841, i dont have a birth date for Elizabeth or place of birth, George would be c20 years old, so most probably he'd be working on a farm, i was hoping to get Thomas and Elizabeth on the 1841 to see what other children they had.

Thank you for your time and effort

Hi Jenny

You have helped  ;D, if they aint showing in the 1841 census it shows that they were more than likely both dead by then.

Thank you
