Non-conformists in Wiltshire
« on: Tuesday 31 August 04 00:44 BST (UK) »
Would like to know what non-conformist groups were meeting in the Marlborough area and surrounding districts in the 1800's.  Have a family line in Rockley that were not CofE.
Thanks for your help.

Genuki  http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/WIL/Marlborough/index.htm
gives some information on this. The IGI link leads to film details
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/library/fhlcatalog/supermainframeset.asp?display=filmhitlist&columns=*%2C180%2C0&filmno=0816594

The pro link given on this page http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/WIL/church.htm
is probably worth following, but I have some difficulty searching pro so will leave that to you.

Wiltshire-OPC-Project just gives:

Non Conformity and Other Places of Worship
Independent
Congregational
Wesleyan Methodist
Primitive Methodist
Baptist

but no dates.

Try:

http://maps.familysearch.org/

You can search for any parish in England and then see what other parishes are adjacent, also any non-C of E congregations in the area. There is all sorts of other useful information, including links to the Family History Library Catalogue and the Research Wiki.

Bear in mind, though, that marriages had to be in the C of E for everyone except Quakers and Jews until 1837, and nonconformists were often buried in C of E churchyards, if their own denomination did not have its own burial ground.

Good luck
