help!
« on: Monday 14 November 05 19:22 GMT (UK) »
does anyone have any info on the kettles?
my dads name was colin kettle, his parents names were;
walter kettle, & florence kettle.
we know that florences maiden name was lygo, and that my dad was born in 1937, but we dont have any more info on our family at all. we think that walter had a brother called cyril, and that walter died when colin was 7yrs old, but that really is all we know. both grand parents are dead, and so is my dad, so we have no way of getting any info, and even when florence was alive, she wasnt very forth coming, and never spoke about walter, or if there was any more family. help would be wondeerful!!

So you have Colin Kettle, b 1937 son of walter kettle & florence lygo

Walter Kettle dies 1944-ish?

Was he a casualty of war? if so, look at www.cwcg.org there may be some additional info on him there.

In addition, look at the GRO (St Catherine's house) indexes. These are online at several pay-per-view sites for the period you want, otherwise use a UK library or LDS centre.

Search for:

(a)The marriage of Walter & Florence.

Order the certificate to get information on their fathers.

Until you have that, there isn't much more that can be done.

Good luck,

PB

Hello BevJane

Where do we start.........

I gather your father was born in Essex and his parents the same?

It appears from what you have said that you knew your grandmother when she was alive?, if that is the case, do you know the cemetary where she is buried.........if so, she is probably buried with your grandfather! if it's accessible you could go there and note the ages of your grandparents and anything else the gravestone reveals.

freebmd is limited with its births in the 20th century, but their are two born in Essex
WALTER ALFRED KETTLE born in the district of West Ham in 1903
WALTER VIVIAN KETTLE born in the district of Orsett in 1909

do either of these ring any bells?

You are going to need the marriage cert of Walter & Florence (it reveals father's names, address at time of marriage and may give you family names in the shape of witnesses)

and then the World is your oyster to 1851 and probably/maybe 1841 and then the work starts!

thank you both very much for replying, i really appreciate it!
walter alfred kettle sounds right as my dads middle name was alfred, but my nan was born in 1911, so maybe he was older than her, or maybe not!
there is also a story in the family that walter or maybe his father were found on the steps of an orphanage, so maybe we arent kettles after all!
thanks again for your help!

NORMALLY........the lady of the marriage marries in her home town, and if your dad was born in Friern Barnet it's possible that's where the marriage took place

A marriage/birth/death cert costs £7-00 at 1837online (government site that provides a copy of the original) so it's worth having a close friend or family member with a card........you pay them, never see the card details and get the cert..........it takes about a week + or -
the same site for a £5-00 (55 hits) provides you with the info to order the cert........year/place/qtr/vol/page.........you can go a long way for £12-00, this being the search and consequent marriage cert.........and then we should be able to help....

the only Florence I found was
FLORENCE MARGARET LYGO born at UPPINGHAM in the March qtr of 1908, volume 7a, page 347..UPPINGHAM is mainly in RUTLAND and includes parts of Leicestershire and Northamptonshire.

I know this in an old thread and the original poster hasn't been online for several years but since calwood007 has just posted here I will add the following just incase bevjane is still looking for information.

FreeBMD has a marriage for Alfred W. Kettle and Florence Lygo July/Sept.1935 Hendon registration district volume 3a page 1550.
