Newnhams of Herstmonceux & Whatmans of Hailsham
« on: Friday 18 November 05 10:55 GMT (UK) »
Hello there,

I am trying to find out about my grandparents' families on my Mother's side.

My grandfather was Thomas Whatman 1908-1998 born in Hailsham and my grandmother was Constance Whatman 1910-1995 born in Herstmonceux.

From what I've found out so far Thomas's parents were Thomas b.1872 and Esther b.1868 and
Constance's parents were Thomas b.1881 and Florence b.1883.

Would be grateful if anybody had any further information on the above and further back.

Regards, ;)

Hi again

1881 census details

It now gets a bit confusing as one of the children is with her grand parents, but still in Gardner Street, Hurstmonceux - but the name is now NEWMAN

Sarah Duly, 60, born Hailsham, Sussex, Head.
Hannah Duly, 20, born Herstmonceux, Sussex, Daughter.
Rosetta Duly, 18, born Herstmonceux, Sussex, Daughter.
Rosa Newman, 2, born Herstmonceux, Sussex, Granddaughter

Hi

In 1881, living next door in Gardner Street , Herstmonceux is the following

Stephen Newman, 29, born Hooe, Sussex, Head - Trug Basket Maker
Fanny Newman, 36, born Wartling, Sussex, Wife.
George L. Newman, 11, born Herstmonceux, Sussex, Son.
Sarah Newman, 4, born Herstmonceux, Sussex, Daughter.
Thomas Newman, 7 months, born Herstmonceux, Sussex, Son

Thomas is there as is his father Stephen - but it looks as though the wife in the other census (Sarah) is not his mother, as we have a different wife on this one - Fanny.  As you can also see, the surname is spelt Newman
I wonder if Fanny's maiden name is Duly?

If my 1881 posting was the right family you are looking for, here are some links to family tree pages you might find useful..

http://genforum.genealogy.com/whatman/messages/8.html

http://www.thefurmingerfamilytree.co.uk/Furminger_Tree.htm

"SARAH ANNA FURMINGER born 31 Aug 1845
She married HENRY WHATMAN 20 Dec 1866 i Rye
Children of SARAH FURMINGER and HENRY WHATMAN are:
       i. HENRY WHATMAN, b. 1869, Brede, East Sussex, England.
ii. THOMAS WHATMAN, b. 1872, Brede, East Sussex, England.
iii. ANNIE WHATMAN, b. 1876, Brede, East Sussex, England.
iv. BERTHA WHATMAN, b. 1880, Brede, East Sussex, England
"

http://www.kent-opc.org.uk/Furminger_tree.htm#117

and this link is definitely your Newnhams.. complete with Stephen's two wives Fanny DULY (well guessed Chris) and Sarah REEVES

Hi all,

I'm new to this family tree m'larkey, but it just so happens I AM a Newnham from Herstmonceux!!

My parents still live amile down the road from the village (but I'm now in France).

I think I need to make one correction: according to my sources (ie. a friend of mine that can afford subscriptions to genealogy sites..) Stephen VIDLER Newnham's first wife was Fanny LULHAM (b. 1847). The VIDLER part of his name was his mothers maiden name.
S.V. married Fanny in 1876, then remarried as a widower in 1889, to Sarah Reeves.
S.V. would be my Great Grandfather.

The little info I have after this is a tad sketchy, but his son Herbert was my Grandfather. Some of the names in your research are new to me in this context, but have floated around for some time!

Anyway, hope this is of use.

Regards. Tim
