HELP - Brien/OBrien Convict to Australia
« on: Friday 18 November 05 11:27 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help with how to get information from Ireland?  My gg g'mother was Bridget Mary OBrien (Brien) sentenced in Cork City on 4 jun 1852 and deported to Australia.  I have her convict records, but no information on her parents, family etc.  Is there some way to track her through her court appearance etc?  Any information would be really appreciated.

Thanks Lones

Hi Lones just saw your post re Bridget Mary Brien. If you have her convict records you will have a ship and date of arrival in Sydney. You can then search Convict Indents. Index to all convicts arriving in Aust. There are also ships lists of convicts.I can do look ups for you.Let me know.

Hi Oz Peggy

Thank you for your reply and your offer, yes I have all that info.

Bridget Mary O'Brien, sometimes listed as Brien and sometimes as Mary Bridget was tried in Cork City on 4th June 1852.  She was transported on the Midlothian and arrived in Australia on the 24th Februuary 1853.  Under remarks on the shipping log is the following
B Florian
s Catherine came out in the "Martin Luther"

So I assume she had a brother Florian, presumably still in Ireland and a sister who was a convict also and arrived on the Martin Luther before Bridget did.

I have no further info on her family or her trial.  Do you know if there is anyway to get the trial records or any parental records of convicts.  I would also like to see Catherines records if I could.

I would be so grateful if you can help me with this, it has been a real stumbling block for my research.

I appreciate any help or advise you can give me

Thank you so much

Lones

Hi Lones
with the information you have already it may be possibleto get parent info by working backward from the children's arrival in Aust. You could check births deaths and marriages available online ,free, at www.nswbdm.gov These certificates give a fair bit of info.In Ireland you could do a search on www.nationalarchives.ie this is an index of transportees and you could also search to see if there was a petition made to the Lord Lieutenant. If a petition was written then this record will usually tell you where the trial was held and details of the prisoner and family but also a Document  Reference. I think from this number you can get copies of the petition or records held from National Archives. In Australia there are some online indexes you can search free.

Hope this is a start.Let me know if you need look ups.I will be able to do some on Wednesday.
Oz Peggy.
