Gallagher's occupied a whole block on York Street in Belfast and it was the biggest tobacco factory in the world.  It was founded by TomGallagher of Derry in 1863.  I got this info from a lovely book I have of old photos of Belfast called: 'Made in Belfast' by Vivienne Pollock & Trevor Parkhill (isbn 0-7509-4032-8 £12.99). Pages 58&59 have 3 pictures: 1 of the outside of the factory & 2 inside, 1 of which is of a room full of women stripping tobacco in 1937.  (who knows, 1 of them could by your Mum!)
Best wishes,
Jomalube.

Hi Folks,

This is the same business but a different spelling - Gallahers.
This article is about their Lisnafillan factory just outside Ballymena. www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/yourplaceandmine/topics/work/A767469.shtml
Maureen, your grandmother rolled four cigarettes per minute by hand www.pbs.org/pov/pov2005/brightleaves/special_tobacco_timeline.html

Best Wishes, Chris

Hello Maureen,
I'm glad you found the info useful: I had another look at my book and there's lots of info about the Linen industry and old photos too.  So please try to get hold of a copy, it's great.  My mum's from Belfast, she 77 now, but she loves looking at it and gives me her own accounts of some of the photos which give it a bit more substance.  (My mum worked in a Tobaco factory on Sandy Row when she was 14!).
Chris, my apologies/my mistake- it is spelt 'Gallahers'.
Thanks.

many thanks to both of you

and christopher you always come up trumps what would we all do without you, and please forgive the mis-spelling, so i guess my grandmother must have at one time worked for them as well, this would have been pre 1905.

jomalube

i also have the name Brennan linked to my o'boyle family  in 1890 an ann brennan was the godmother to my grandmothers sister agnes teresa  in belfast

 thanks again

Hi Maureen

My mother also worked in Gallaghers factory in York street in the 1940's
I was browsing the net and found a Website containing old photos of North Belfast, there are three of the factory on pages 3, 5 and 6 its a really good site if you are interested in old photos. The one on page 6 is the factory before it was knocked down to make way for the Yorkgate centre and the others are of it being demolished see address below

search google for...... pictures of old north Belfast and click on.....McCall Collections 2

best wishes
