Hi Judi

sorry, there is not a place with that name as far as I am aware.

Could it possibly be ALBOURNE?

Where did your information come from?

Hello Chris,
I got my info from Ancestry co uk on the 1881 Wales census;
JOHN GOODING born abt 1829 OLBERAUGH SUSSEX  Head 44 Balaclava St, Swansea St Thomas Glamorgan Wales. His son on the same census is my husbands' great grandfather.

Another possibility is Pulborough.

Looks to be a transcription error so suggest an earlier Census lookup would be helpfull here.

Hi Judi & Rob Ham

Under normal circumstances that would be a good idea - but his occupation was 'Mariner' and they were notorious for being at sea on the night of the census.

Found his wife Hannah and the children in Swansea on the 1871 census, she is classified as Head, Married and a Sailors Wife

Found them again in 1861 where Hannah is again Head, Married and at home with the children.

So not having much luck are we.

Hi there

Found him on the 1851 in Swansea, Wales

HO107/ 2466/ Folio 235/ Page 63 - Swansea, Glamorgan, Wales

Joseph Gooding, 64, born Ousby, Suffolk, Head - Superannuated Coast Guard
Sarah Gooding, 59, born London, Middlesex, Wife, - Coastguards Wife.
John Gooding, 27, born Allborough, Suffolk, Son, - Mariner
Hannah Gooding, 20, born South Molton, Devon, Daughter-in-law, - Mariners Wife.

So, he was not born in sussex after all, but in Alborough, Suffolk
