1841 Frant Lookup
« on: Monday 06 September 04 16:27 BST (UK) »
Chris kindly looked up the 1851 wadhurst census for me and found what i was looking for, but now i want to increase my census research by finding them in 1841 and they are either in the frant or speldhurst area.

Here is who i'm looking for.

James Sumner married to Sarah and there should be the children:
James, Henry, William, Alfred, Mary Ann, John, Richard, Sarah and Isabella.

The surname might be spelt Sumner, Summers or Sumners.

They are most likely in Frant area, because all the children around 1841 were born in Frant.

Thanks to anyone that can help.

Hi Darkside

Tonight, I loaded up the 1841 for Frant from the Cd - (126 pages) - blew them up till a page completely filled my screen (17ins monitor), then slowly scrolled through them looking for Sumner / Summer etc.

45 mins later, have been through every page, but not there - but saying that, there was 3 pages that the writing was so faint that could not make out any names.

This is a riduculous situation as the 1851 shows all the kids were born in Frant - but where are they.

Got a feeling they might be in a nearby village, registration address being Frant - but dont really know?

Yea it is riduculous, because he was born in Wadhurst then all his children up to 1864 were born in Frant.  In the 1851 and 1861 census they are in Wadhurst.  By 1881 they had gone to Ashurst, but it looks by 1891 he had died, but you found his son James in 1891 tonight for me even though i can't link in the family next door to them, but they must be linked somehow to be living next door.  I will have to work that one out.

They might be at wadhurst, but i think you had checked that for me and came up with nothing.

Thanks for looking up again

Hi Darkside

It could be that he lived in Speldhurst, but always returned to Frant to have his kids baptised.

My Grt Grandfather was in Maythorne, near Southwell in Notts, all of his kids were baptised in Southwell Minster, when they married, they returned to Southwell Minster to be baptised as well.

Just a thought

Hi Darkside

I did the same with Rotherfield (126 pages) as I did with Frant and Wadhurst, but no sign of your James and Sarah, but I did find these though:

HO107/ 1117/ 10  - ? Lane, Rotherfield

SUMNER William, 40, Farmer
                   Sarah, 40
                   Francis, 15
                   Sophia, 15
                   William, 11
                         ?     , 8 (female)
                    John, 6
                    Harriett, 3

All born in County of Sussex.

and on the next but one page was:

HO107/ 1117/ 10/ - Barkcorner, Rotherfield

SUMNER Sarah, 75
                  Mary, 6
                  Sophia, 40

All born in Sussex.

Hope you can fit them into your research

Thanks for finding them Chris.

I have found theses 1s before and they are believed to be linked.  The 1 with Sarah aged 75 i think is Park Corner and not BarkCorner.

Thanks for finding them though.

Darkside

Back to the James Sumner we know he wasn't in Frant and Wadhurst we believe and now not in Rotherfield now.  That leaves with only 1 place Speldhurst.  Its a puzzle about his birth as well, because each of the census have given a different area that he was born.

Because they have said
1851 census that he was born in Wadhurst
1861 census that he was born in Rotherfield
1881 census also says that he was born in Rotherfield.

But he was baptised in Speldhurst and I have got that his father was born in Speldhurst.

So it might be that they lived in Speldhurst and got the children bapised in Frant.  If they wasn't there either then im a bit stuck on where else they could be.

Thanks for all your help i am greatful for all that you have been doing.
