1841 Census Kent
« on: Monday 05 December 05 12:05 GMT (UK) »
Does anybody have access to Ramsgate records? If so I'm after an Isaac Vinten - an auctioneer. Hannah Pitcher - not sure of occupation. And if anybody has Deal records - a John Bayley (various variations of surnames) and Hannah. John was a mariner.

Hi Karen,
I've been through the Deal 1841 census, loads of Bayley families, but couldn't spot John and Hannah. Do you have any further details about these two that you could post. Most helpful would be ages, names of children and where they are on the 1851 or 1861 census, if you've found them then. I may be able to identify them with a bit more info.
Thanks,
Carol

Hi Karen,
Here's a possible entry for Isaac in 1841:
ref HO107 469-01 folio 20a page 33: High Street, Ramsgate
Issac (spelt as per census) Vinten age 25 cabinet m born in county
No one else in his household I'm afraid, and I couldn't spot Hannah Pitcher in Ramsgate.

1851 I have John as living with his brother Isaac, and sister Hannah. There address is 1 Gulliver Street. They then had a son John James born c1854, and then a James c1858. In 1881 they were living at 3 Primrose Hill. Not got info on them for the inbetween bits. John was born c1820 and Hannah was born c1824. So it is possible they were not married in 1841, her maiden name was Vinten. I was hoping I could link those two together somewhere.

Hi Karen,
Thank you for your response. Here's the full entry from the 1851 census:
ref HO107 1631h folio 704 page 5: 16, Middle Street, Deal
John Bayley head un age 31 mariner born Deal
Isaac do brother un age 21 mariner born do
Hannah do sister un age 19 housekeeper born do
Sarah Bushell visitor un age 27 stay maker born Deal

So John was married sometime after the 1851 census was taken, as it still shows him as unmarried.

The closest that I could get to this family in 1841 has a John and a Hannah, but no Isaac. I've checked all Deal 1841, but can't seem to spot an Isaac Bayley aged about 11.
ref HO107 466-02 folio 70 page 37: Middle Street, Deal
William Bayley age 40 mariner
Sarah do age 40
John do age 20 j shoe m
William do age 15
Catherine do age 11
Hannah do age 8
all born in county
(This may or may not be the right family, have you got the marriage certificate for John and Hannah, which should give you Johns fathers name and occupation?)

Hope this helps a bit,
xx Carol

And here's the entry from the 1871 census:
ref RG10 1003 folio 77 page 29: 3, Primrose Hill, Deal
John Bailey head mar age 51 mariner born Deal
Hannah do wife mar age 41 born Ireland
John do son age 17 born Deal
James do son age 13 errand boy born do
William do age 9 scholar born do
Charles do son age 2 scholar born do

That adds a couple more children to the family, and Hannah is just stating Ireland on all censuses for her place of birth. Hope this helps to fill in a few gaps.

I have the ref. number for John and Hannah's marriage, just been banned from sending for anymore til after Christmas. But at least I've added another child. Charles appears in 1881 but no William. Thankyou for that information, I'll file it til I know Father's name and then come back to it I think.
