Old surnames - Cant(Kent) & Cantis(Kentish)
« on: Wednesday 07 December 05 12:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm back on the origins of the KENTISH surname again!

I have found a reference that says:

An old pronunciation and spelling.  Cant local 'of Kent'
and Cantis for Kentish.

Anyone heard of this before? and if so are there any good websites where I can research this name some more?

Thanks
Anna :)

Hi, Anna

I have always assumed that the name of Kent originated from the tribe of the Canti that lived in the area, as opposed to the Iceni (East Anglia), Brigantes (Midlands or North, I think), and many others, Belgae (South), Trinovantes, etc

That said, it is quite likely that the name Kentish originated as being someone from Kent.

Maybe someone else can give more information

Julius Caesar wrote of the people of Ceint (Roman CANTIACUM):

"Of all the Britons those that inhabit the lands of the Cantii are the most civilised."

The "Cant" and "Cantish" are "as heard" - i.e. local pronunciation of "Kent" and "Kentish"!   ;)
