Frank Virgin - Adelaide after 1901
« on: Wednesday 07 December 05 14:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi Folks

I wonder if someone could help or point me in the right direction. My grandad's brother, Frank Virgin emigrated to Australia some time after 1901, as I have him on the census.

All I know about him apart from the fact that he was born 1885 to Henry and Anna Virgin in Thurlbear, Somerset, is that he was in Adelaide at some point. A distant member of the family has a photo taken in Adelaide that purports to be of Frank and his wife (Dulcie?). Family rumour has it that there were children.

I've looked on the Australian national archives website, but to no avail.

If anyone can come up with anything I shal be most grateful  ;D

Hi Angela'
I think Frank is on the
 http://www.naa.gov.au    site.

Maybe you could look again, but this is what I saw.
Frank Virgin
Service number 51862
Enlisted Adelaide
Place of birth Tauton England
Next of Kin, wife, Eva Annie Virgin

The location Adelaide may give you a base to search for offspring if it is him.
I just put in virgin and he is on records page 101 to 120.
Good luck. Sue

WOW! Rootschatters do it again  ;D

Carol and Sue - thank you both SO much for all that. It certainly looks like my grandad's brother and it's good to have the Dulcie reference confirmed. It's also really good to have Adelaide confirmed as where he lived, so I can hunt for descendants there.

I'd never heard that he married twice, but then I'd never heard anything at all until recently  ??? I had seen that bit on the national archives, Sue, but had discounted it because of the wrong wife's name. When will I learn not to make assumptions?  ::)

I wonder what happened to Eva Annie - I think I need to get back in touch with the lady who had seen the photo of Frank and Dulcie, to see if we can date it. It might give us an idea for when they married.

Just another query - I notice that you can get copies from the http://www.naa.gov.au    site. I think I'm being a bit thick here, but I can't tell whether that would give any more information than is indexed. Does either of you know?

Thanks again - you are VERY much appreciated....

Having had another look, I think I can answer my own question about copies of naa documents.

The next question is - can I find my way around their application forms ! Time will tell......

Thanks again

Hi Angela

I have found a couple of things on the Staunton family so will scan and send.  There wasn't anything on Frank that I could find.   :'(

Hi everyone

Just an update on great uncle Frank  ::)

I sent off for his Military service records from the http://www.naa.gov.au web site and they arrived today. Very exciting  ;D

One surprise is that the Attestation Paper says he had a wife (which I knew - Eva Annie) and a child (which I definitely didn't)

I was wondering if anyone could double check for me about the child. It would presumably have to have been born before 1 Aug 1917, which is the date of the paper?

I'm a bit puzzled because Carol didn't find any children when she kindly did all those lookups for me. Perhaps the child was born before the wedding (Apr 1916)? In that case, would it be just listed under the mother's name (Eva Annie Staunton)?

Any help very gratefully appreciated  ;D

Thanks

Angela

Hi Carol

Thanks very much for that  ;D

You are so kind to spend so much time on this....
.... I must admit it's driving me nuts  ::)

The more I find out about Frank and his (potential - I haven't traced kids yet) family, the more confusing it gets!

I wonder what happened to the child on his military record - perhaps it was a 'mishap' from ages ago.

This family history stuff can get really frustrating- especially when I'm so far away. The army record had him and Eva Annie living at 32 Fullarton Road, Parkside when he joined up. If Eva Annie was RC then it looks even more likely that his marriage to Dulcie was a common law one.

Judging by her name, I think Dulcie might have been Dulcie Fowler. Could I be a bit presumptuous and ask if you can see any children born to her under that name?

Thanks very much for all your help...

Angela
