1851 Census Lookup For Abel Vaughan Please
« on: Wednesday 08 September 04 09:30 BST (UK) »
I trying to find the parents of Abel Vaughan, who was  born in Owin, Hampshire in 1841.

I'm hoping he will appear in the census along with his parents and older siblings.

To anyone who has 1861 Census access I would add that Abel has a brother, Peter Philip Vaughan (born Flintshire in 1851) and his sister, Mary P. Vaughan (born Flintshire in 1854).This information may aid in identifying the family.

Abel's son, Abel Jnr, was born in Liverpool in 1881, so you can see that the family travelled around a bit.

Any information about the parents and siblings of Abel Snr would be much appreciated.TIA.

best wishes

Hi rcuser,

Sorry to see that no-one has been able to help you yet.

Are you any further forward in your research?  Is there anything you can add to the information you have already given?

Hi Nell,

Thanks for your posting. It looks like Owin, Hampshire is one of those small villages which disappeared over time.

I've had to give up on Abel and try to concentrate my search on Abel, Peter and Mary in Flintshire. Unfortunately, I can't seem to get someone to do a search there. Mind you I don't know what information you need for a search.

I know in the 1881 Census that Abel and Peter are married and have left home. They are living in Liverpool.

I'm trying to get the names of their parents so I can track back to the next generation. Hence the 1851 Lookup as it should reveal Abel and Peter as living with their parents. The 1861 Census should show Abel, Peter and Mary still at home assuming that they have not moved to Liverpool after Mary's birth in 1854.

What sort of information would you need to make a search more viable?

Look forward to hearing from you.

best wishes

Hi recuser,

Having looked through all my atlases, maps, parish lists etc, searched various gazetteers, I have some news for you.  I think you are looking in the wrong place  :-\  I think you will find that Abel was born in 1840/41 in Cwm, Flintshire.  Unfortunately this parish is not included on the IGI or the BVRI2.  But there is a local census index for 1841 and 1851.  Post the information on the Flintshire board and see if someone can help you.

Good luck.

Hi Nell,

Thanks for that. Hope that you are right. I got the name from an 1851 Census printout and it did definitely say Hampshire.

However, I'll try my luck again in Flintshire. Thanks again for your help.

best wishes

I looked at the 1871 census image - a bit faint but it says Flintshire.  But there again the indexer didn't read it right either.  ;)

Hi Nell,

Looks like it was possibly transcribed wrongly. Either way you've put me on the right track and I've got a definite place in Flintshire to focus on. I'll go once more into "bloodhound" mode and see where it leads. Thanks for the followup.

best wishes
