1851 look up Askam
« on: Wednesday 08 September 04 21:14 BST (UK) »
I would be grateful for a look up of Harriet ASKAM (ASKHAM) in 1851 and probably in Sculcoates or Hull.
She was christened in 1836 in Hull.

This is the full family (that I know of).

John ASKAM (b. circa 1800)
Elizabeth ASKAM (b. circa 1800)
Robert Fairburn ASKAM bap. 1824 Hull
Emma Fairburn ASKAM bap. 1827 Hull
John Fairburn ASKAM bap. 1830 Hull
Harriett ASKAM bap. 1836 Hull

Emma Fairburn Askam and John Fairburn Askam are on the 1851 census for Holy Trinity, Hull. I don’t know where the rest are. Some may have died, but I know Harriet didn’t die until 1869 and she didn’t marry until 1854.

Thank you.
Belen

Hi Belen

Sorry we haven't been able to help you so far on this one.

Have you made any progress,  or do you have any further details that could help someone to find what you are looking for?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

Ticker

I wish to thank Ticker and Wobbly for their replies. Sorry about the delay in replying, but was in the UK for December and have only just returned.

I have some more information on Harriet, but she died quite young. She married Henry Rivett, a draper from Gainsborough, Lincolnshire in 1854 in Sculcoates. She died 1869, Hull and he in Sculcoates 1876. He is on the 1871 census living Whitefriars Gate, Hull.

Wobbly was correct in thinking that my Askams were those he found in 1861. In fact the line of John Fairburn (Mibron?) Askam is the one I am tracing and have followed it through to today. The main reason I am trying to find Harriet in 1851 is that I'm hoping she will be with her parents and I can find out something more about them.

In 1841, the parents and the 4 children were living in Market Place, Hull. The father, John Askam was a grocer.

In 1851, only John Fairburn Askam (the son) and his sister Emma Fairburn Askam were living at Market Place. The son is now the grocer. I have no idea where the rest were or if, apart from Harriet, they were dead or alive. Emma went on to marry the grocer from Dewsbury.

My hope is one day to find Harriet in 1851, either with her parent(s) or with other relatives which would point me in the right direction. Thank you for your help and interest and if you have any suggestions I would be most grateful.

Best wishes,
Belen

Hi Belen,

I could send you the whole of the Askham's for 1851 if you like. There is a family born in Leeds and Wakefield, living in Hull that might be a connection to your family.

There is also a Mary Askam, born in Hull.

There aren't too many of them but they are all set out in alphabetical order rather than family group, so if you had them then you could sort them out.

The 1861 is set out in family groups.

Apart from looking on 1837 online, & free BMD and getting some idea of marriages etc, and the odd marriage certiificate, then these addresses wont be realised. Consider the poor law, and the workhouse records, they may also give you some assistance. I don't know where you would find that out in East Yorks but someone on the system may know.

I would be really grateful for the Ask(h)ams in the census returns. Thank you. I'll try and sort them out.

Although Askam is a relatively unusual name, according to the IGI, 3 John Askams married an Elizabeth in Hull or Sculcoates between 1821 and 1823. One of them was Elizabeth Fairburn. However a John Askam was christened in Fairburn in 1796. It could be either or neither.

3 of the children, John, Emma and Harriet all married in 1854 and I have 2 of the marriage certificates, one of which says the father, John, was deceased. According to FreeBMD, 4 John Askams died between 1841 and 1851, but not in Hull. So you may be correct in thinking that he originated from somewhere else and perhaps returned there when he retired.

Thank you for your help and advice.
best wishes,
Belen

Okay Belen,

If you send me a personal e-mail then I can reply to that rather than clutter up the system, that is of course if you have no problem with that otherwise I will send them on the system ie so that everyone else can read them.
