Ummm, I don't know how that smiley face snuck in there!  I entered question marks.  The given name in question is *not* Santa Clause!  ; )

And I hope the image isn't too big; it's the first time I've attached one here.

Oh, and I forgot to say that the Parkers were on Chatham Hill.  The page itself says Chatham but the listing of the district on Ancestry says Gillingham (so I'm confused about exactly where they were).  H.O. 107 1611, Folio 304?, can't make out the page number on the image.

Thanks again!

I agree it could be something like 'Clementia' which has been written Clemenchea?

Thanks, Jan and Abgie!

I thought it looked like Clemenchee or Clementine but I hadn't thought of Clemency or Clementina!  I will look into those possibilities.

The Parkers were in Chatham or Gillingham in 1851.

It's hard to see but I think she was 18 in 1851, so she would have been born about 1833.  Her place of birth is Market Dereham, Norfolk.

Harriet, next in line, was born about 1840 in Chatham.  I don't have the family in 1841 and this particular daughter was not listed with the parents in 1861.

Thanks again!

Hi Josephine,

It looks like Clemenchia to me - with the mark above the final 'a' actually being the dot on the 'i'.  That would be a phonetic representation of Clementia.

Do you know the married name of Susanna?

I am wondering about the following (census info is crown copyright).
1871, RG10/5358, Cardiff
EDWARDS Wm Geo, Head, Mar, 63, Ships Broker, b Ilfracombe
Do Clementia, Wife, Mar, 40, b Norfolk
Do Ellen, Daughter, Unm, 27, b Barnstaple
Do Frederic, Son, Unm, Ships Broker, 23, b Barnstaple
Do Willm Y, Son, 4, b Cardiff
plus a cook and a housemaid
(William is the only child of Clementia's - William snr is in the 1861 census as a Widower with four children including Ellen and Frederick)

and

1881, RG11/ 2484, Bristol St James & St Pauls Out, Gloucester
GARDNER Henry, Head, Mar, 49, Commercial Clerk, b Shoreditch Middlesex
Do Susannah S, Wife, Mar, 56, b Yarmouth Norfolk
Do Harry, Son, Unm, 21, Accountants Clerk, b Hackney Middlesex
Do Mary A, Sister, Unm, 56, Annuitant, b Shoreditch Middlesex
EDWARDS Clementia, Sister-in-law, Widow, 50, Annuitant, b Yarmouth Norfolk
Do William Y, Nephew, 14, a Scholar, b Cardiff
and a servant.

Of course, this might all be a complete red herring; if only the birthplaces of Susannah and Clementia were given as Market Dereham ... (this Susannah's birthplace is Yarmouth in 1861 and 1871 also; Harry, incidentally, is not with the family in 1871 but might be the Henry GARDENER, 11, b Middlesex London, a Scholar in Taunton Somerset)

Thank you so much, JAP!

I will take a look at these families!

I found a marriage record online at Medway Ancestors that might be Susanna's:

Parish Church, Gillingham, Kent
31 Aug. 1851

James Simmons, brickmaker, father = Charles Simmons, shoemaker
Susanna Parker, father = John Parker, labourer
Residence:  [looks like] Hands Town

I found this Simmons couple in the 1861 census in Sittingbourne, Kent.  The wife is listed as Susan but her birthplace is Market Dereham, Norfolk, so this might be the right person.  I couldn't find them after 1861.  Perhaps Mr. Simmons died and Susanna married Mr. Gardner?

Would you please tell me if Cardiff is a city or county?  (I'm in Canada.)

Thanks again!
