Israel's emigrating to Canada 1890s
« on: Wednesday 14 December 05 18:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone, interested in finding information about Isaac Israel born 1850 in Llantarnam, Newport, Monmouthshire, South Wales, United Kingdom. He married Rachel Rogers born 1847 in Mynyddslwyn, Monmouthshire. They married in 1887 in Newport. I believe they emigrated to Canada after 1891, as they are in the 1891 Wales census. Any info would be much appreciated.
All the best,
Kate. :)

There are a lot of people by that name in Canada.  You could ask at the Jewish Public Library in Toronto if they can help you find them, as they have a lot of stuff;  I am not sure when it is open though.  I believe there is a similar library in Montreal.  Montreal and Toronto are the biggest centres of Jewish population, but by no means exclusive.
(Perhaps I should add that I'm assuming they're Jewish, but would be very very surprised if they weren't.)

Hi Loo, no they weren't Jewish, they were Church of Wales. I believe that the family emigrated to England and Wales from Russia in the 1600's and changed to Church Of Wales in the 1700's.
I live in the UK so I'm not really sure how to go about tracing them.
Isaac Israel was my GG Grandfathers brother and I thought it would be interesting to find what happened to him.
Thank you for replying, all the best
Kate.

ps Merry Christmas :)

There's an Isaac Israel and a Rachel Israel in Upper Machen, Monmouthshire, in the 1901 UK census (this would fit as I can't find them in the 1901 Canadian census).  Did they have any children?

That sounds like them, I'm not sure if they had any children, don't really know that much about them. I was told that they emigrated to Canada though, I assumed in the 1890s as I could not find them in the later census. If possible could you give me the reference for the census page please?
Thank you very much for looking for me, all the best, Kate.
Merry Christmas :)

Interesting story.  If it were me, I still couldn't rule out that they might have been originally Jewish, as Israel is not a Russian name.  Do you know anything about the circumstances of their arrival in Britain?
It is either a Jewish name or a Welsh non-conformist name, as I understand it, and you are, I think, saying that they were not non-conformists, aren't you?  (I'm not too good on the names of national churches.)
www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/   Search under "name meanings".
There are 260 telephone listings for this surname in Canada:  www.canada411.com  You could try writing, I suppose.  One is named Isaac, and 2 have first initial I.
The one named Isaac lives in Montreal area:
8052 Ch Kildare
Cote Saint-Luc, QC H4W 1E2
Canada
Phone: (514) 484-5935
The forename might have been carried down through the generations.

Thank you Loo for your help. Looks like they went after the 1901 Wales census as Jorose found them still in Monmouthshire.
Its all based on assumption really, I believe my Israel's were related to the Glamorgan Israel's as mine were the only Israel's in Monmouthshire in the mid 1700's to early 1800's and the Glamorgan Israel's seem to be mainly from Russian stock.
Thanks again for looking for this information, I will take your advice and may write to this chap in the New Year.

All the best and have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Kate. :)

Kate,

You could also keep your eye on this website for transcriptions of the 1911 census of Canada:
